YORK, PA – The York College men's basketball team has been selected to host one of the 16 pods in the country for the opening weekend of the 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball national tournament. The Spartans earned their berth in the tournament thanks to their Capital Athletic Conference championship on Saturday at Christopher Newport.
The Spartans are making their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance and first since the 2011-12 season. York made their deepest run in the tournament in 2004-05 when they advanced to the Final Four in Salem.
The Spartans welcome Yeshiva, Hamilton, and Nazareth to Wolf Gymnasium for games on Friday and Saturday. The Spartans will play Yeshiva in the opening round on Friday. That game will be followed by the Hamilton and Nazareth game. The two winners will play Saturday. Game times will be set later on Monday afternoon.
The Spartans enter the tournament with a record of 23-4 as they ended the season ranked first in the Mid-Atlantic region and #12 overall according to the d3hoops.com poll.
Yeshiva earned their first ever NCAA Tournament berth with an 87-81 win over Purchase in the Skyline Conference championship game on Sunday afternoon. The Maccabees enter the tournament with a mark of 18-10 but have been playing great at the right time of the season. Yeshiva has won 12 of their last 13 games as they have been rolling in 2018.
Hamilton comes in as an at-large team from the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The Continentals lost to Williams in the NESCAC semifinals, 76-73, and enter the NCAA Tournament with a record of 22-4. Hamilton opened the season with 15 straight wins before falling at Amherst on January 20.
Nazareth comes to York with a mark of 20-7 as they won the Empire 8 Tournament title on Saturday, downing Utica 66-64 in the title game. Nazareth has won nine of their last ten en route to their conference championship.
The tournament ticket policy will be announced on Tuesday along with prices and availability.
