Spartans Head to Newport News to Face CNU for CAC Championship

YORK, PA – The York College men's basketball team will attempt to win their third Capital Athletic Conference Tournament championship on Saturday as they head to top seeded Christopher Newport for a title game tilt at 2:00 pm in the Freeman Center in Newport News, Virginia. The Captains are making their fifth straight championship game appearance as they have won the last two titles. York's championship game appearance is their first since 2011-12 when they won the title at Mary Washington.

Spartans and Captains in the CAC Tournament

The Spartans are 22-21 all-time in the CAC Tournament while they are 6-10 in semifinal round games, capturing championships in 2004-05 and 2011-12 … York has not faced Christopher Newport in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament in the Captains' five years in the CAC … the Spartans are 2-3 in CAC Championship games with a 1-2 mark on the road in championship games … York's last championship came on the road as York earned a 59-51 win at Mary Washington for the 2012 championship … York's other title came at home against Catholic in the 2005 title game … the Captains have appeared in all five CAC championship games in which they have been eligible … the Captains have two titles as they beat Salisbury in 2015-16 and again in 2016-17 … the Captains two championships have come by a total of two points as they beat Salisbury 68-67 in overtime in 15-16 and then earned a 63-62 win last season … the Captains lost a one point decision to Salisbury 58-57 in the 2014-15 title game … CNU lost to Mary Washington 65-48 in their first CAC championship game … CNU is 8-2 all-time in the CAC Tournament.

The winner today's championship game will earn the CAC's automatic berth to the upcoming NCAA Division III National Championship tournament. The loser of the title game will likely earn an At-Large berth as they Spartans and Captains are ranked 1-2 in the Middle Atlantic region. The NCAA Tournament field will be announced on Monday, February 26 at 12:00 pm. The tournament starts on Friday, March 2.
