#3 Captains Use Big Second Half to Down Spartans

YORK, PA – The York College men's basketball team closed out their 2016-17 regular season with a 70-59 setback against #3 Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon in York. The Captains closed the regular season with their 17th consecutive victory.

• The two squads went back and forth early as neither team could gain control of the game. With the game tied at 12, York ripped off a 14-5 spurt to take a 26-17 lead. That would be York's biggest lead of the day. The Captains halted the run when Marcus Carter was the beneficiary of a foul call on a corner three with 7:22 left in the half. Carter drained all three free throws to cut York's lead to six. Those three free throws started a 9-2 run as the Spartan lead was cut to 28-26. The Spartans took a 32-30 lead to the break.

• The opening five minutes of the second half were much like the first as the teams went back and fourth. The Spartans held a 37-36 lead on a Zack Galic three-point play with 14:53. The Captains then fashioned a game-changing 17-4 run, turning their one-point deficit into a 53-41 lead with 7:43 left in the game.

• York got the Captains lead down to nine three different times with the last time coming at 64-55 with 2:50 left on a pair of Matt Scamuffo free throws. The Captains answered with six straight points to push the lead to a game-high 15 points before the Captains settled for the 11 point victory.

The Spartans fall to 1-9 all-time against the Captains as CNU has won nine straight in the series … the loss snaps a three-game win streak for the Spartans … prior to the game, the Spartans honored their seniors, guard Brad Wesner and four-year manager Alex Colton … the Spartans lost for just the fourth time when leading at the half (12-4) … the Spartans forced 20 CNU turnovers but scored just 11 points off the Captain miscues … York was outrebounded by a season-high 22 caroms (46-24) … York allowed 14 offensive rebounds to the Captains and CNU turned that into 10 second chance points … York had 11 steals in the game, the eighth time this year and fourth straight game the Spartans reached double figures in steals … York was held to just five three pointers made, their lowest total in seven games … freshman Jared Wagner recorded a career-high with 19 points as he was 5-for-11 from the floor, 2-for-4 from three and 7-for-10 from the free throw line … junior Zack Galic had a career-high three blocked shots while he also had seven points and five rebounds in 26 minutes … the 16 regular season wins for York are the most since the 2010-11 Spartan squad went 17-8.



The Spartans begin the Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Tuesday evening as they host Wesley College in the tournament's first round. The Spartans are the tournament's three seed while the Wolverines are the sixth seed. Tip time in York is set for 8:00 pm. The winner advances to face the second seeded Salisbury Sea Gulls in the tournament semifinals on Thursday.
