Bobcats Slip Past Spartans in CAC Contest

YORK, PA – The York College men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker, falling to Frostburg State University 72-68 on Wednesday evening in York.

The Spartans fall to 2-14 overall and 1-7 in the league while the Bobcats hold an identical 2-14 mark overall while they are also 1-7 in the conference.

York got off to a slow start as they have a number of times this year as the Bobcats jumped out to a 10-4 lead just 2:58 into the game.

Just like the Spartans have gotten off to a slow start in many games, they quickly came back and got themselves back into the game with an 8-2 spurt, tying the game at 12. The game went back and forth over the next three minutes before the Bobcats went on a sustained 19-6 spurt to take a 35-23 lead with 6:41 left in the half.

The Green and White answered with a 14-5 run to cut the Bobcat lead to 40-37 with 31 seconds left in the half. York got a three pointer from the corner from Brad Wesner (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) with just under three seconds left in the half, tying the game at 40. However, Frostburg's Quinton Dodson hit a 75-foot heave at the buzzer to give the Bobcats a 43-40 lead at the break.

Frostburg came out the break and pushed their lead to six before the Spartans got another Wesner triple and a lay up from senior Matt McNeely (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) to cut the Bobcat lead to 50-49. The Bobcats responded with back-to-back buckets to push the lead back to five. York got threes from Ryan Beaver (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and Tyler Alcid (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) to take a 55-54 lead with 13:56 left.

Frostburg State's Torrell Goodman scored four of the next five points as the Bobcats took a 58-56 lead at the 11:35 mark. The Bobcats' lead would grow to eight at 68-60 before the Spartans made a spirited comeback, tying the game at 68 with just 59 seconds left.

Frostburg's Jabari Kamau hit a tough bucket in the lane with 30 seconds left to give the Bobcats a two-point lead. Kamau missed the free throw and the Spartans had possession. After a time out, York turned the ball over with 16 seconds left. York was then forced to foul four times to get to the bonus. York finally sent the Bobcats to the line with 11 seconds left. Brian Biscoe sunk both free throws to give the Bobcats a four-point lead. York missed a lay up with six seconds left as the Spartans couldn't pick up their third home win of the year.

Frostburg State placed five players in double figures led by Kamau as he poured in a game-high 18 points on 8-of-18 shooting. Kamau added seven rebounds and three assists. Goodman registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Aaron Bellamy contributed 14 points while Tyler Campbell and Dodson each added 10 points.

McNeely led the Spartans with 15 points and six rebounds. Fellow senior Mike Mathews (Newark, Del./Salesianum) chipped in with 13 points, three rebounds and two blocked shots. Freshman Dalton Myers (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) returned to the Spartan lineup as he notched 10 rebounds and seven rebounds in his 21 minutes of action.

Freshman Joey Feinberg (New City, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) had a fantastic game as he dished out a career-high 10 assists in addition to his eight points and career-high seven rebounds for York.

Frostburg shot 44.1% from the floor while they went 7-for-21 (33.3%) from three. The Bobcats were just 5-for-15 (33.3%) from the stripe in the win.

The Spartans shot 44.6% from the floor including 6-of-17 (35.3%) from three. The Green and White struggled again from the line as they converted just 12-of-27 (44.4%) from the line.

Frostburg outrebounded the Spartans 45-38 as the Bobcats held a 19-9 margin in second chance points.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they host the University of Mary Washington in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. Tip time at Charles Wolf Gymnasium is set for 3:00 pm.
