READING, PA – The Farmingdale State University Rams made 55 trips to the free throw line as they outlasted the York College men's basketball team, 87-75, in the consolation game of the Albright College Holiday Tournament on Monday afternoon in Reading, PA.
The Rams improved to 6-4 overall with the victory. York falls to 1-9 for the campaign.
Farmingdale's Jonathan Annan got the Rams off to a good start as he scored the first nine points of the game. The Spartans final got on the board with an Evan Crosby (Honeyone Falls, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) bucket at the 15:29 mark. The Spartans scored 11 of the next 17 points of the game as they trailed 15-13 midway through the opening half. The Farmingdale State lead would vacillate between two and nine points over the next eight minutes of the game as the Rams continued to keep the Spartans at arms length. The Rams then went on an 8-1 run to push their lead to 15 before settling for the 41-28 halftime advantage.
York came out swinging in the second half as they opened the stanza with a 16-5 run to cut their deficit to 46-44. The Rams responded with a 14-6 run of their own to push their lead back to 10 at 64-54 with 8:26 left in the game. Farmingdale State extended the lead to 16 at 72-56 but the Spartans kept fighting as they went on a quick 9-0 run, drawing to within seven at 72-65. The Rams scored four straight at the free throw line to push the lead back to 11. York made one more run at it with five straight points to cut their deficit to six but the Rams did just enough defensively and at the free throw line to finish the game on an 11-5 run for the 12-point win.
The Rams placed five in double figures led by Annan as he notched 16 points. Annan was 7-for-13 from the floor including 1-for-2 from three and 1-for-3 from the stripe. He also had four assists and three steals in his 31 minutes of work. Timothy Johnson added 15 points, three assists, two rebounds and two steals. Donald Lewes tallied 14 points, eight rebounds and six blocked shots. Justin Bailey and Curtis Williams each added 10 points while Williams also pulled in seven rebounds.
Seniors Mike Mathews (Newark, Del./Salesianum) and Matt McNeely (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) led the Spartans with 19 points each. Mathews' effort established a new career-high while he also tied a career-high with nine rebounds. McNeely added eight rebounds in his 22 minutes of work for the Spartans. Freshman Ryan Beaver (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) added 11 points including a trio of three-pointers. Freshman point guard Joey Feinberg (New City, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) dished out a career-high eight assists for the Green and White.
The Rams finished the game shooting 43.9% from the floor including 3-for-8 from three. Farmingdale State attempted a whooping 55 free throws as they converted 34 for a shooting percentage of 61.8%. In the two games in Reading, the Spartan opponents went to the line a combined 86 times, making 53 of those attempts. Conversely, York made just 24 trips to the line as they converted 14.
York shot 39.7% from the field for the game while they made a season-high tying eight three point field goals.
York outrebounded the Rams 46-43 and held a slight 17-14 edge in second chance points.
The Spartans are scheduled to return to action on Saturday when they step back into Capital Athletic Conference play with a trip to Fredericksburg, VA to face the University of Mary Washington Eagles. Tip time at Anderson Arena is set for 3:00 pm.
