Early Lead Pushes Farmingdale Past The Spartans

YORK, Pa. – The York College men's basketball team dropped a 70-61 decision to Farmingdale State in the consolation game of the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Spartans are now 4-8 overall, while Farmingdale improves to 6-4 overall.

The Rams got on the board first and held the lead for the majority of the half. They started the game out on a 12-3 run. With 14:16 remaining the Rams took their biggest lead of the half, going up by nine points, 12-3.

Mitch Kemp (York, Pa./York Suburban) scored two big three pointers to help get the Spartans back into the game, but Farmingdale was able to answer and push the lead back to seven. Despite being down for most of the half, the Spartans continued to fight back. With just over 7 minutes to go before halftime, Chad Styer (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) hit two three pointers to cut Farmingdale's lead to one point. A few minutes later Styer hit two more three's and helped York gain its first lead of the game.

Unfortunately, the Ram's answered back with two three's of their own and finished the half with a traditional three point play to go up 31-29 heading into the locker room.

The Spartans came out with intensity in the second half. Thanks to good positioning, York was able to get 7'1" A.J. Mathews from Farmingdale on the bench in foul trouble with four.

Despite putting the Ram's best player on the bench for most of the game, the Spartans could not seem to get their shots to fall. They never gained the lead back throughout the entire second half.

The last 20 minutes of play became very physical and saw a lot of questionable calls made. York continued to battle, but Farmingdale once again had an answer for all the Spartan comeback attempts. At the 6:27 mark the Rams went on a 7-0 run and never looked back. With only 18 seconds left, they took a 12-point lead, the biggest of the game. Jeremey Skoloda (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) sunk a three but it was too little too late and the Ram's would hold onto a 70-61 win.

York finished the game with four players in double digits. Kemp was the Spartans leading scorer with 16 points. Styer added 13 points and went 4-5 from long range. Julian Watson (Odenton, Md./Arundel) and Todd Maciejewski (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) each chipped in 11 points.

Leading the way for the Rams was AJ Matthews. Matthews finished the game with 16 points, while Ryan Davis added 13.

The Spartans shot 37% from the floor (20-54) and only hit 10-of-21 (47.6%) free throws.

From the field, the Rams did not fair much better. Farmingdale shot 39.7% (25-63) and went 12-24 (50%) from the free throw line. The Rams outrebounded the Spartans 46-37.

The Green and White return to action next Saturday, Jan. 5 at home against Misericordia. Tip time for the game is set for 4:00 pm.
