YORK, Pa. – Grove City College erased a 13-point halftime deficit and went on to record a 65-60 win over the York College Spartans in the opening round of the 13th Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Classic tournament at Charles Wolf Gymnasium in York.
With the loss, the Spartans now stand at 4-7 overall. Grove City records just its second win of the season and now stands at 2-7 overall.
Both teams traded the lead back-and-forth throughout the beginning of the first half. At the 9:34 mark, Brandon Enck (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) hit a free throw to tie the game up at 14. Mike Mathews (Newark, Del./Salesianum) followed with a layup to give York the lead. The Spartans finished the half with a 15-3 run and were able to head into halftime up by 33-20.
Senior Todd Maciejewski (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) pulled down an impressive 11 boards in the first 20 minutes of play. Mathews played strong offensively in the first half for the Green and White, as he led York with nine points.
In the second half, the Spartan squad struggled on the offensive end. The Wolverines never let the deficit get to them as they clawed away at the Spartan lead.
Grove City was able to tie the game a few times mid-way in the second half, but the Spartans seemed to be able to answer back. With just over six minutes left in the game the Wolverines got hot from behind the line, knocking down four three pointers in a row as the complexion and momentum of the game completely swung in the Wolverines' favor.
Despite going down by nine late in the game, the Spartans continued to fight for shots. Senior Mitch Kemp (York, Pa./York Suburban) had two big three's in the closing minutes of the game. He was able to cut the Wolverine lead to three with only four seconds remaining, but Grove City would sink two free throws to salt away the win.
York finished the game with two players in double digits. Kemp was the Spartans leading scorer with 13 points, while Mathews added 11 points. Maciejewski chipped in seven points while he pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds.
Leading the way for the Wolvernies was Mitch Marmelstein. Marmelstien finished the game with 24 points and six rebounds. He was 5-8 from three-point range as the Spartans never seemed to get to him behind the arc in time. Brian Geisler also played a strong game for Grove City and finished with 16 points. Geisler also hurt the Spartans from long range, going 4-for-6.
The Wolverines were 24-54 (44.4%) from the floor. In the second half they were extremely hot from behind the arc as they went 8-for-12 (66.7%). The Spartans struggled, going 21-59 (35.6%) from the field. The Spartans were also narrowly outrebounded 39-36.
The Spartans will play in Saturday's tournament consolation game. The Green and White face Farmingdale State at 1:00 pm. Grove City will face Gettysburg in the championship immediately following the York vs. Farmingdale game.
