Kemp's Career-High 22 Points Not Enough as Spartans Fall to Oneonta
SCRANTON, PA – The York College men's basketball squad got a career-high 22 points from senior Mitch Kemp (York, Pa./York Suburban) but it would not be enough as the Spartans dropped a 92-77 decision to Oneonta State in the consolation game of the Radisson Invitational in Scranton, PA.
The Spartans were victims of hot shooting in their game-one loss to Baruch. The trend continued on Saturday as the Red Dragons shot 64.2% from the floor including 16-of-27 (59.3%) from three.
The hot shooting got the Red Dragons an early lead as Dan Lee hit back-to-back threes to give Oneonta a 6-0 advantage after two possessions. In fact, the first three baskets for the Red Dragons and first five makes for York were all three pointers. The fifth three came from Kemp, drawing York to within one at 16-15 with 14:30 left in the half.
The Red Dragons would scored 22 of the next 33 points over the ensuing five minutes as they opened up a 38-26 lead with nine minutes left in the half. The Spartans went on a 10-4 run capped by a Jeremy Skoloda (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) triple as the Green and White found themselves right back in the game, trailing by just four points.
The Red Dragons answered with a Zach Mager three just eight seconds later as Oneonta went on a quick 11-5 spurt to push the lead back to ten. The Spartans scored the final three points of the half to take a 51-44 deficit to the intermission.
Both teams were on fire from beyond the arc in the first half. The Spartans went 9-for-11 (81.8%) in the opening 20 minutes while Oneonta converted 11-of-18 (61.1%) of their shots from three.
The pace slowed in the second half as both teams cooled off from distance. The Red Dragons maintained the lead in double digits until the Spartans trimmed the lead to six on a pair of Todd Maciejewski (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) lay ups with 15:07 left in the game. The Red Dragons quickly pushed the lead back to 12 before York cut the lead to nine twice more over the next two minutes. After Mike Mathews (Newark, Del./Salesianum) hit a jumper to draw York to within nine at 70-61, the Red Dragons stuck the Spartans with a 10-2 spurt to push the lead to 17. York would not get closer than 12 the rest of the way.
Kemp's 22 points came on efficient 7-of-10 shooting including a blistering 5-of-7 from distance. He also canned all three free throws in his 29 minutes of work. Maciejewski, who earned an All-Tournament team berth for York, added 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Spartan senior was 6-for-10 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the free throw line. He also had seven steals, three assists, and two blocked shots in one of his finest all-around games as a Spartan. Mathews added nine points for York.
The Red Dragons put four players in double figures led by Jackson Zuvic as he tied Kemp for game-high honors with 22 points. Zuvic was 10-for-13 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the line while he also had four rebounds and three assists. Mager added 21 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals in 32 minutes of play. Mager was 7-for-8 from the floor including 5-for-5 from three and 2-for-2 from the stripe. Frankie Kelley notched a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 12 assists. Lee was the fourth double figure scorer for Oneonta with 12 points while he also had five assists.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 44.4% from the floor and 62.5% (10-for-16) from three. York was solid from the free throw line with an 11-of-14 performance.
York did a fantastic job of taking care of the ball as they committed just ten turnovers in the loss. Oneonta had 15 miscues in the game while the Red Dragons held a 30-27 edge on the glass.
The Spartans make their home debut on Tuesday night when they host Messiah in a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
