YORK, Pa. – The York College men's basketball team used a total team effort Wednesday evening to best visiting Frostburg St. 81-73 in a tough Capital Athletic Conference tilt. The Spartans (12-7, 7-3 CAC) avenge their loss to the Bobcats (9-10, 6-4 CAC) earlier this season and pick up their fifth straight win, each of which have come against CAC competition. York now stands in sole possession of third-place in the conference standings.
Paul Kouvaris started out hot for the Green and White as he scored York's first eight points and 14 of their first 20. The athletic senior forward, who finished the night with a game-high 22, proved an early catalyst for York as the Spartans led 20-19 at the 10:58 mark of the first half.
In a game which at times seemed more like a track meet, both squads went back and forth throughout the first half. The opening stanza saw nine lead changes and seven ties as the Bobcats would go into the break up three at 40-37.
In the second half, York's balanced offense proved just the antidote to what could be intense Bobcat defensive pressure. Over the latter 20 minutes, seven different Spartans scored including three players – Kouvaris, Jeremy Skoloda, and Todd Maciejewski – who each notched eight points. That unselfishness allowed the Green and White to recover from their slight halftime deficit and grab the lead for good at the 17:17 mark of the second courtesy of a Maciejewski layup. From that point, the Spartans never relinquished their advantage.
York used a 10-2 run to open the frame, building a five-point margin at 47-42 with 15:35 left to play. That lead fluctuated throughout the half, but did grow to as much as 12 at 73-61 with 5:24 to play.
The final five minutes saw Frostburg threaten the Spartan advantage, drawing as close as four at 77-73 with 21 seconds left. However, tremendous free throw shooting down the stretch iced the game for the Green and White. During the final 1:35, the Spartans were 8-for-10 from the stripe including a flawless 6-for-6 over the last 34 seconds. Andrew Pawlyk finished the game for York as he nailed two free throws to make it a three-possession contest with only eight seconds left.
York's outstanding offensive effort, 81 points is their highest output since their 94-71 triumph over LaRoche on December 13, was equaled by their superb defensive effort. The Spartans put in tremendous work on the defensive end as the Bobcats registered 22 turnovers and York garnered a season-best 13 steals. Conversely, the home squad handled the Frostburg pressure well, led by point guard Julian Watson. Watson played 36 minutes for the Green and White, including all 20 in the second half, and only had two turnovers.
For the game, Kouvaris poured in his 22 points courtesy of an 8-for-15 performance from the field and a 6-for-7 showing from the free throw line. Maciejewski finished with 16 points and nine rebounds while Watson also tallied 16 points.
DeSean Antonie paced the Bobcats with 20 points on the night while reigning CAC Player of the Week Troy Duckett tallied 19.
The Spartans will look to push their current win streak to six game in a row as they return to action on Saturday, January 28. The Green and White welcome Hood to the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center as they square off in a 2:00 pm CAC tilt.
