Kouvaris and Maciejewski Power Spartans Past Mustangs

YORK, PA – The York College men's basketball team earned a hard-fought 59-46 Capital Athletic Conference win over Stevenson University on Wednesday night in York. The Spartans, winners of three straight, improve to 10-7 overall and conclude the first half of the conference schedule at 5-3. The Mustangs fall to 4-12 overall and 1-6 in the loop.

The game was back-and-forth in the opening stages of the first half. The Spartans started to pull away midway thought the stanza as York fashioned a 13-2 spurt that turned a one point York lead into an 11-point advantage. The run was powered by Mitch Kemp, Paul Kouvaris and Todd Maciejewski as Kemp had five points during the spurt while Kouvaris and Maciejewski each added four.

The Mustangs trimmed the York lead back down to six before the Spartans took the 32-24 lead to the break.

The second half was a low scoring 20 minutes as both defenses forced the opposing offense to run significant time off the shot clock with each possession. The Mustangs cut York's lead to six twice early in the stanza but the Spartans embarked on a four-minute 13-5 run that pushed the York advantage to a game-high 14 points at 47-33. The Spartans would then go almost seven minutes without a bucket. Fortunately for York, the Mustangs would only be able to get a Joe Hindle three during the Spartan drought as York maintained the lead between 10 and 13 points over the final 11 minutes of the game.

Kouvaris again powered the Spartans as the senior forward tallied a game-high 20 points on a very efficient 8-of-12 performance from the floor. Kouvaris made 4-of-7 from the stripe while he also pulled in six rebounds, had two blocked shots and two steals in his 34 minutes of play. Maciejewski notched his second career double-double as the junior forward had 14 points and a season-high 11 rebounds. Maciejewski was 7-for-10 from the floor while he also had two assists and a steal. Junior Julian Watson and senior Mo Oursler each added eight points to the Spartan attack.

Jason Jones led the Mustangs with 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting including 1-of-2 from three. Greg Collins added eight points while Brett Burrier and Andrew Bishop each contributed seven points.

The Spartans shot a solid 49.1% from the floor for the game while they converted 3-of-13 (23.1%) from three. The three made three-point field goals ties a season low for York. The Spartans also made just nine trips to the line, by far their lowest total of the season.

Stevenson shot 40% from the floor and 33.3% (3-of-9) from distance. The Mustangs went 7-for-12 (58.3%) from the stripe in the loss.

The Spartans held the Mustangs to a season-low 46 points. The 46 points is also York's best defensive effort of the year. York outrebounded their guests 32-27 while the Mustangs had 16 turnovers to just 11 for York.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they begin the second half of the conference schedule with a trip to Arlington, Virginia to face Marymount University. Tip time at the Verizon Sports Arena is set for 4:00 pm.
