Spartans Snap Two Game Skid with Key Win over Hood

YORK, PA – The York College men's basketball team snapped their two-game losing streak with a 70-66 win over Hood College in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening in York. The Spartans improve to 10-5 overall and 4-2 in the CAC while the Blazers fall to 8-6 overall and 4-3 in the CAC.
Junior Paul Kouvaris paced the Spartans with 16 points while Tyler Snoots led Hood with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
The Blazers got off to a quick start on a Cameron Cook triple just 12 seconds into the game. However, the opening eight minutes of the game would be back and forth as the game featured a pair of ties and four lead changes. With the contest tied at 13, the Spartans put together a 20-8 run covering over nine minutes as they took a 33-21 lead. The Blazers trimmed the Spartan advantage to nine (38-29) at the break.
The Green and White opened the second half with a 7-0 run, extending their lead to a game-high 16 with 17:46 left in the game. The Blazers responded with a 7-0 spurt of their own, cutting the Spartan advantage to 45-36.
The York lead hovered in double figures over the next five minutes before Hood cut the Spartan advantage to five (57-52) on a Justin Stone three-point play with 9:24 remaining. The Spartans answered with a 6-1 spurt to increase the lead back to double figures at 63-53. Hood's Reco Siler split a pair of free throws 46 seconds later and York's lead would not again reach double figures in the game.
With 1:27 left in regulation, Stone hit a lay up which cut the Spartan lead to 66-63. After a pair of empty possessions on both sides, sophomore guard Julian Watson was fouled and converted a pair of clutch free throws with 36 seconds left. The Spartans got a stop on the ensuing Blazer possession and senior Kevin Whaley got a defensive rebound and was fouled. He also converted a pair of free throws to extend York's lead to 70-63. Siler hit a three with seven seconds left, providing York with their final four-point margin of victory.
Kouvaris was outstanding in the game as the junior forward was 6-for-9 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. He also had four rebounds, an assist, a blocked shot and a steal to go along with his 16 points. Sophomore Jeremy Skoloda added 12 points, four assists, and three rebounds in 26 minutes. Skoloda was a very efficient 5-for-7 from the floor while he was also 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Junior forward Andrew Pawlyk was the third Spartan in double figures with 10 points while he also had four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Whaley and Watson each chipped in with nine points for York.
Snoots was a very steady 5-for-8 from the floor en route to his 14 points. He was also 4-for-7 from the free throw line while his 13 rebounds were a game-high. Stone contributed 13 points in his 22 minutes of action while Cook was the third Blazer in double figures with 11 points.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 49% from the floor, 38.9% (7-for-18) from three and 62.5% (15-for-24) from the free throw line. The Blazers were limited to just 39% shooting from the field while they went 5-for-16 (31.3%) from three. Hood finished the game shooting an identical 15-for-24 from the charity stripe. The Blazers are the fifth opponent the Spartans have held to under 40% shooting in a game this year and York is 5-0 in those contests.
Hood did out-rebound the Spartans 38-34 in the game as they attempted 10 more shots than York in the game. Both teams committed 18 turnovers in the contest.
The win ends York's season-high seven game home stand. The Green and White now head out on the road for a pair of upcoming CAC contests. The Spartans head to Salisbury University Saturday for a 4:00 pm game followed by a trip to Stevenson to face the Mustangs next Wednesday.
