YORK, Pa. – York College junior forward Paul Kouvaris has been named the latest Spartan Athlete-of-the-Week after helping the Green and White to a pair of victories last week. Over York's pair of non-conference contests, the athletic forward averaged a double-double with 17.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.
Kouvaris simply went off in the Spartans' 92-84 win against Cabrini on December 29, as he poured in a season-high 24 points, just two shy of his career-best, and pulled down 14 rebounds. The junior shot a scalding 9-for-10 from the field and got to the free throw line 13 times where he added six points. During his 30 minutes of work, Kouvaris also tallied two steals, two blocks, and one assists.
On Sunday, the first round of the 2011 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, Kouvaris aided the Green and White to a 106-51 triumph over Central Penn. In just 16 minutes, he notched 11 points and seven rebounds while also totaling two steals and two assists. Notably, the 6-5 forward ran the break for the Spartans very effectively on several occasions to help the Green and White amass their 55-point win.
For the season, Kouvaris, the only Spartan to start all 12 games thus far, is averaging 11.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest. His scoring average ranks third on the squad while his rebounding mark is York's best.
Kouvaris and the Spartans return to action tonight, Monday, January 3, in the championship game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic against Misericordia. Tip-time from the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center is slated for 6:00 pm. All proceeds from Sunday and Monday's games go to benefit the fight against cancer.
