YORK, Pa. – The Spartan's basketball slate has started off to a tremendous 3-0 start thanks in large part to senior guard Kevin Whaley, the latest Spartan Athlete-of-the-Week.
The Green and White started off the week with a season-opening win against Lebanon Valley College defeating them easily 90-57. Taking that confidence into the weekend, York took home the White Rose City Classic Championship by overcoming Penn State-York 86-66 and Elizabethtown 84-74 for the title.
Whaley has started his senior campaign with a trio of outstanding performances. He gave the crowd a show on the first game of the season shooting 5-for-6 from the three-point range, 7-for-10 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the line, totaling 23 points, the highest opening night scoring output for a Spartan in over 15 years.
Overall the 6'4" guard averaged 55.6% (20-for-36) from the floor, 47.1% (8-for-17) from three and 84.6% (11-13) from the line. Whaley also registered 3.6 assists per outing. He averaged 19.7 points per game over his 78 minutes of play this weekend.
Not only was he a shooting threat, but he also contributed defensively averaging 2.1 steals and 3.0 rebounds per game.
After this outstanding week, Whaley and the Spartans will look to continue their strong play to start the season. The next match up for the Spartans will be held Tuesday, November 23, at 7:00 pm against Messiah at York's own Wolf Gymnasium.
