YORK, Pa. – On the heels of his selection as the Spartan Athlete-of-the-Week, York College senior guard Kevin Whaley has also been chosen as a Capital Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Co-Player-of-the-Week. Whaley joins Frostburg's Jamal Bracken in the weekly CAC accolade.
Whaley was simply fantastic over York's trio of wins to open the season. In the Spartans first contest of the 2010-2011 campaign, a Monday night 86-66 win over Lebanon Valley, Whaley recorded a 23-point performance – marking the highest opening night scoring output from a Spartan in over 15 years. The senior also totaled eight assists while committing just one turnover.
On Friday and Saturday, Whaley led the Green and White to the White Rose City Classic Championship held at York's Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center. He posted 15 points, three rebounds, and two assists in just 20 minutes of action in York's 90-57 win in the Classic's opener against Penn State-York on Friday. In Saturday's title game against Elizabethtown, he totaled a game-high 21 points while adding four caroms, three steals, and an assist to lead the Spartans to an 84-74 triumph.
For the week, Whaley averaged 19.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.1 steals over the three games. He shot a scalding 55.6% from the floor, including 47.1% from three, and a strong 84.6% from the charity stripe.
Whaley and the Spartans now look toward Tuesday, November 23, when they host Messiah in a 7:00 pm tilt from York's Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center.
