Spartans Capture Second Straight Tournament Title
CRESSON, PA – The York College men’s basketball team continued their early season surge with their second straight tournament championship as they downed Mt. Aloysius 88-73 in the championship game of the Mt. Aloysius Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Cresson, PA. The Spartans, who are now 4-0, won the White Rose City Classic last weekend as they are off to a roaring start. Mount Aloysius falls to 2-2 with the loss.
After an early tie, the Spartans built a six-point lead through the first five minutes of the game. The guests eventually built the lead to seven before the Mounties went on a 10-2 run to take a 21-20 advantage with 9:47 remaining in the opening half. The teams spent the next three minutes going back and forth before the Spartans took the lead for good on a Kevin Whaley (Dover, Pa./Dover) jumper with 7:09 left on the clock. The Mounties got to within one on a Brian Collins bucket with 3:18 left in the half but the Spartans finished the half on a 9-0 run that gave them a 49-39 halftime advantage.
The Mounties came out of the intermission and fell behind by 12 before clawing their way back into the game. Mount Aloysius cut the lead down to two at 59-57 with 11:58 remaining in the game. However, the Spartans slowly built their lead back up into double digits as they scored 16 of the next 24 points to take a 75-65 lead. The Spartans pushed the lead to as many as 17 before settling for the 15-point championship game win.
Whaley set a new career-high as the junior poured in a game-high 23 points on a very efficient 9-of-15 shooting from the floor including a three pointer and a 4-for-4 performance from the charity stripe. He also had three assists and two steals for the Green and White. Senior Nick Brady (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) added 16 points in 28 minutes of action. Sophomore Paul Kouvaris (Baltimore, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) chipped in with 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two blocked shots and a steal. Kouvaris was 6-for-11 from the floor and 1-for-1 from the line. Junior Dylan Hoffman (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) was the fourth Spartan in double figures with 10 points while he also contributed four rebounds and three assists.
Harold Clark led the Mounties with 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting including 4-of-7 from three and 1-for-2 from the stripe. Armond Perez chipped in with 16 points and four rebounds while Collins contributed 14 points and seven rebounds. Joey Stephenson was the fourth Mountie in double figures with 11 points.
The Spartans had another good shooting night as they converted 49.3% from the floor including 33% from distance. York was also good at the line with a 13-for-16 (82.3%) performance. Mount Aloysius shot 40.3% from the field but just 26.9% from beyond the arc. The Mounties went 12-for-18 from the line for the game.
The hosts held a slight 34-30 edge in rebounding with both teams getting eight second-chance points. The Spartans forced 19 turnovers, which led to 24 points while York’s 18 miscues only cost them 13 points.
The Spartans return to the Grumbacher Center
on Tuesday night when they host Gettysburg College in a
non-conference contest. Game time at Wolf Gymnasium is set for 8:00
