Huge Second Half Pushes Spartans to CAC Victory
YORK, PA – The York College men’s basketball team used a 55-point second half to cruise to a 90-67 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Gallaudet University in the Spartans’ league opener on Wednesday in York. The Spartans improve to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the league while the Bison fall to 3-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
After a nip-and-tuck first half, the Spartans found themselves up just one point less than a minute and a half into the second 20 minutes. The Spartans then went on a three-point binge as Kevin Whaley (Dover, Pa./Dover), Jeremy Skoloda (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley), and Nick Brady (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) each banged home triples during a 16-6 run that turned a 37-36 York lead into a 53-42 Spartan advantage.
After a three minute period of back and forth play, the Spartans smacked the Bison with a 15-2 run, turning the close game into a 23-point York bulge. The run was keyed by Brady and Skoloda as they combined to score nine of the 15 points on the spurt.
The Spartans eventually built the lead to as many as 29 before settling for the 23-point margin of victory.
The first half would give no indication that the final score would be anything but close. The stanza featured four ties and seven lead changes. The Spartans built a eight-point lead midway through the half only to have the Bison storm back courtesy of a 10-2 run that tied the game at 28 with 4:10 remaining before the break. The Spartans took a brief four-point lead before the Bison countered with four points of their own, tying the game at 32. Whaley gave the Spartans the halftime edge as he drained a three ball with 1:15 showing on the clock for the final points of the half.
Whaley paced the Spartans with 17 points including 11 first-half markers. He was 6-for-10 from the floor including a career-high four three pointers. Whaley also had two rebounds, a pair of assists, and two steals in his 26 minutes of action. Skoloda struck for a career-high 15 points as he was 5-for-10 from the floor including three triples while he also converted a pair of free throws. Skoloda also tied a career-high with four assists. Brady was his steady self with 15 points, a game-high nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals in 30 minutes of play. Senior Jeremy Keefer (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) had a big second half when he recorded nine of his 13 points. Keefer also pulled in six rebounds for the game. Freshman Mitch Kemp (York, Pa./York Suburban) notched a new career-high as he recorded 10 points in addition to four rebounds. Kemp was 4-for-6 from the floor including 2-for-2 from distance. Sophomore Matt Moley (York, Pa./West York) also had a very efficient night as he tallied seven points and three assists in just 15 minutes. Moley was 2-for-2 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the free throw line.
Tony Tatum led the Bison with 16 points as the dynamic sophomore also had seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Brandon McMillan contributed 13 points and three rebounds while Johnny Jackson was the third Bison in double figures with 10 points, four rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 50% from the floor including a blistering 57% in the second half. The Spartans were also very efficient from distance as they converted 11-of-21 threes including 6-of-9 in the second half. The Spartans went 11-for-16 (68.6%) at the free throw line for the contest.
Gallaudet shot 44.1% from the floor and made 7-of-21 from beyond the arc. The Bison converted 8-of-11 from the charity stripe.
The Green and White outrebounded their guests 40-32 as they held a 40-28 edge in points in the paint. York also got 20 points off 20 Bison turnovers.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday
evening in a huge Capital Athletic Conference contest against
nationally ranked St. Mary’s College. The Seahawks currently
sit atop the CAC standings with a mark of 6-1 overall and 3-0 in
the CAC. Tip time at Wolf Gymnasium is set for 7:00 pm.
