Hot Shooting Wolverines Down Spartans 98-85

DOVER, DEL – The Wesley College Wolverines converted 16-of-26 three-point field goals en route to a 98-85 Capital Athletic Conference win over the York College men’s basketball on Saturday afternoon in Dover, Del. The loss is the Spartans’ second straight to a CAC leader as the Green and White fall to 7-16 overall and 5-9 in the league. The Wolverines maintain their tie for first place with St. Mary’s as they are 16-7 overall and 12-2 in the conference.

The Wolverines jumped on the Spartans early as they scored 16 of the first 20 points of the game. The Spartans trimmed the lead to five at 23-18, thanks to an 8-0 Spartan spurt. After the teams traded buckets, the Wolverines hit the Green and White with a 12-4 run, pushing the Wesley lead to 37-24. York worked hard to cut into the lead as they trimmed it to seven, at 47-40, at the break.

The Spartans scored the first point of the second half but Wesley went on a 12-4 run to push their lead to 59-45 just under three minutes into the half. Wesley increased the lead to as many as 15 points and kept their advantage in double figures for most of the rest of the half. York got to within seven at 75-68 with 9:03 left in the half. The Wolverines got a Jermaine Carter hit a three 19 seconds later and the Spartans would not get any closer than eight the rest of the way.
Rashawn Johnson poured in a game-high 32 points to pace the Wolverines. He was 11-for-16 from the floor, 7-for-9 from three and 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Johnson, the likely CAC Player-of-the-Year, also had five rebounds, an assist, a blocked shot and a steal in 34 minutes of action. Evan Martin added 21 points including four three point field goals. Martin handed out four assists and collected a pair of steals. Kevin Johnson chipped in with 12 points and three assists while Alphonzo Wright was the fourth Wolverine in double figures with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Junior Nick Brady (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) led the Spartans with 21 points while he pulled in four rebounds. Brady was 8-for-19 from the floor including two threes. Freshman Paul Kouvaris (Baltimore, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) tallied a career-high 18 points as he was 9-for-14 from the floor with six rebounds and two blocked shots in one of his best collegiate performances. Junior Jeremy Keefer (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) and freshman Matt Moley (York, Pa./West York) each added 12 points. The 12 points for Moley was a new career high while he also collected six rebounds. Sophomore Andrew Pawlyk (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) was the fifth Spartan in double figures with 10 points.

The Wolverines shot 54% from the field for the game and 61.5% from three. Wesley was 14-for-22 (63.6%) from the free throw line while York went just 6-for-9 from line. The Spartans shot 55.1% from the floor but converted just 3-of-9 (33.3%) from distance.

Wesley out-rebounded the Spartans 34-31 while York held a 54-26 margin in points in the paint.

The Spartans now face a virtual must win situation in their final two games of the year as they attempt to earn a berth in the six-team Capital Athletic Conference championship tournament.The Spartans begin the critical two-game home stand on Wednesday night as they host Gallaudet in an 8:00 pm contest.
