Spartans Fall Just Short at Stevenson
STEVENSON, MD-The York
College dropped a hard-fought 72-67 Capital Athletic Conference
decision at Stevenson University on Saturday night in Stevenson,
MD. The loss drops the Spartans to 6-14 overall and 4-7 in the CAC
while the win boosts the Mustangs’ record to 5-14 and 4-6 in
the CAC. The win for the Mustangs also gives them the tiebreaker
over the Spartans for the sixth and final CAC tournament
The contest was a frustrating one for the Green and White as the Stevenson lead never reached double figures. It was also a game that the Spartans never led in but had the game tied three times including once midway through the second half.
The opening 20 minutes saw the Mustangs have a lead the majority of the half with that lead being as big as eight on six different occasions including a 36-28 lead at the break.
The Spartans worked hard in the opening seven minutes of the second half to cut into the Stevenson lead. That work paid off when Pat Kelley (Davidsonville, Md./South River) hit a jumper with 12:09 left in the game, tying the contest at 44. The Mustangs responded with a quick 6-0 spurt to take a 50-44 lead with 8:45 remaining in regulation. The Spartans again worked to cut into the Stevenson lead as they drew to within one at 57-56 on a Nick Brady (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) lay up with 3:51 left. Again, the Mustangs responded with a quick 8-1 run that extended their lead to 65-57 with 1:02 remaining. York cut their deficit to three twice in the last 22 seconds but each time the Mustangs responded by canning a pair of free throws to provide for a five point cushion. Stevenson won the game at the line over the final 1:02 as they went 7-for-10 from the stripe.
Greg Woody led all scorers as the guard tallied 23 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the floor and a 9-for-12 performance from the free throw line. Kerry Dugan chipped in with nine points, seven rebounds a blocked shot and a steal while Chaise Lancaster contributed nine points and four rebounds in 26 minutes of action. Matt Leddy and Greg Collins each notched eight points in the winning Mustang effort.
Brady led the Spartans with 21 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Brady was 8-for-14 from the floor with two threes and a 3-for-4 effort from the free throw line. Kelley tallied a season-high 17 points, one point short of his career-high. Kelley was 6-for-14 from the floor and 5-for-7 from the free throw line. Junior captain Jeremy Keefer (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) was the third Spartan in double figures with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Stevenson shot 48.4% from the floor in the first half and finished shooting 43.4% from the field for the game. The Mustangs made 4-of-17 (23.5%) from three but did convert 22-of-30 (73.3%) from the free throw line for the contest.
York managed to shoot just 36.5% from the floor and struggled to just 23.1% (3-for-13) shooting from three. The Spartans shot 66.7% (18-for-27) from the stripe.
The Mustangs out-rebounded the Spartans 40-35 while York held a slight 14-13 edge in second-chance points. The Spartans did force 17 Mustang turnovers which they converted into 15 points. The Green and White committed just nine turnovers which Stevenson turned into eight points.
The Spartans return to action on Monday evening when they host the University of Mary Washington in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. Tip time is scheduled for 8:00 pm at Wolf Gymnasium in York.
