The York College basketball teams hit the Charles Wolf Gymnasium floor tonight in their 2007-08 home openers. The women's team hosts former CAC foe Goucher at 6:00 pm while the men's team battles Gettysburg at 8:00 pm. Live Stats and the ESPN Radio audio feed are available. The Spartan women look to continue their fast start to the 2007-08 campaign as former Capital Athletic Conference foe Goucher College visits York, Pennsylvania. Coach Betsy Witman’s squad opens their home slate tonight after going 2-0 at the Guildford College Tip-Off Tournament in basketball-rich North Carolina.
In their first game, the Spartans rolled to an 82-62 victory over Ferrum. All-CAC forward Kristen Daly poured in a game-high 19 points while also pulling down 14 rebounds. Every one of York’s starters tallied in double-figures including freshman April Sparkman who notched eleven points while starting in her first collegiate game.
Against Averett, the Spartans stayed hot earned a decisive 74-58 win. Daly continued her stellar performance as the senior scored 21 points, grabbed seven rebounds, recorded two blocks, and snatched two steals. For her efforts, Daly was named tournament MVP averaging a double-double (20 points and 10.5 rebounds) for the two games. Amanda Andrews, who had tallied 14 points the day before, poured in 14 points while both All-CAC guard Keli Ward and Chanel Perez registered 11 points each.
The Spartan men open their 2007-08 home slate hosting the Gettysbury College Bullets. Last weekend, York traveled to Salem, VA for Roanoke College’s V Foundation Classic. In their first game against the host squad, the green and white found themselves in early 15-0 hole and were unable to dig out eventually falling 73-50. Rebounding the next afternoon, the Spartans took out their frustrations from the previous game dropping Frostburg State 89-75 to improve their early season record to 1-1.
Against Frostburg, senior Levi Winters notched a double-double pouring in 19 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Thus far, Winters is York’s leading scorer averaging 13.5 points per contest. Sophomores Nick Brady and Jeremy Keefer each added 16 points in the game to help catapult the Spartans to the season’s first victory.
