Spartans Fall Hard in Season Opener

ROANOKE, VA - The York College men’s basketball team opened the 2007-08 campaign with a rough 73-50 loss to Roanoke College.  The Spartans begin the year 0-1 while the Maroons start 1-0.

Roanoke dominated the game early, scoring the first 15 points.  York finally got on the board with 13:30 left in the first half when Jeremy Keefer (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) hit his first shot attempt.  Unable to climb out of the early hole, the Spartans would struggle throughout the evening.

At the half, Roanoke was up 34-13 even though they shot below 40%.  Unfortunately for the Spartans, they fared much worse shooting only 17.9% from the floor.

York did play an admirable second frame, scoring 37 points in the second 20 minutes.  Roanoke was never in any real danger from the Spartan squad and the Maroons went on to win 73-50.

On the night, Keefer led York with 10 points, four rebounds, three assists, and one steal.  Mike Riley (Webster, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) added nine points while Levi Winters (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) notched eight of his own.

Roanoke’s AJ Dowell was the game’s leading scoring with 16 points in only 21 minutes.  Zach Milton scored 14, while Josh LaPorte was a monster on the glass grabbing 17 rebounds.

The Spartans look to bounce back on Saturday when they take on Frostburg State at 2 pm in the tournament’s consolation game.
