McGowan Keys Spartan Win Over Bison
YORK, PA-The York College men’s basketball team snapped their two game losing streak in emphatic fashion as the green and white rolled to a 91-66 victory over Gallaudet University on Saturday afternoon at Charles Wolf Gymnasium in York. The Spartans improve to 10-6 overall and 5-2 in the CAC while the Bison fall to 2-13 and 2-6 in the league.
The Spartans started off slowly as neither team seemed to be able to garner the momentum. The Bison held an early 7-4 lead before Nick Brady (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) tied the game at seven with a three. That triple was the first blow in an 11-0 run that gave the Spartans a 15-7 lead with 11:59 left in the opening half. The Bison battled back and cut the Spartan lead to two at 18-16 before a Chad McGowan (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) dunk and a three from Nate Lankford (York, Pa./West York) quickly pushed the Spartan advantage back to seven. Again, Gallaudet trimmed the Spartan lead down, this time to three at 23-20 but York then embarked on a 13-2 run capped by a Brady three and a layup to go up 36-22 with 3:07 left in the opening 20 minutes of action. The Bison scored five of the final seven points of the half but York led 38-27 heading into intermission.
The Spartans opened the half with a game plan of having their 6-7 All-American be the offensive force and it worked as McGowan scored eight points on a half-opening 13-4 run that pushed the Spartan lead to 51-31. Brady had the other five points on the run as York began pulling away from the pesky Bison.
Gallaudet had other ideas and was not about to go away as they cut the Spartan lead to 11 on a Johnny Jackson three with 11:36 remaining in the game. The Spartans responded with an 19-2 run, pushing the lead to 28 at 79-51 with 6:58 left. McGowan had 11 points on the run as he continued to get shots deep into the heart of the Bison defense. Over the final six minutes of the game, the Spartans pushed the lead to as many as 30 before settling for the 25 point win.
McGowan was outstanding for the Spartans as he poured in a season-high 31 points on a very efficient 15-of-21 from the floor. The 15 field goals are a new career high for the Spartan senior. He also passed former Spartan standout Brandon Bushey for fifth on the Spartans’ all-time scoring list. McGowan now has 1,737 career points for the Spartans. The senior added seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 30 minutes of action. Brady was the other Spartan in double figures with a career-high 20 points. It is Brady’s sixth straight game in double figures as he continues to come on for the green and white. Brady was 7-for-12 from the floor including 4-of-7 from three. Brady pulled down seven caroms for the green and white. Sophomore Jeremy Keefer (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) played an all-around outstanding game as the forward had eight points, eight rebounds, and a career-high eight assists.
Jon Mowl led the Bison with 19 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Mowl was 5-for-16 from the floor including 1-for-10 from three. He was a solid 8-for-11 from the free throw line for Gallaudet. Onye Davis recorded the double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Lance Gonzalez added 15 points, six rebounds, and two assists in 33 minutes of work. Jackson was the fourth Bison in double figures with 10 points while he also chipped in six boards.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 56.5% from the floor and 42.1% from three. The Bison converted 35.5% of their attempts from the field while they went just 7-of-27 from three including 1-for-12 in the first half. The Spartans again struggled from the free throw line as they were just 5-for-12 while the Bison went a respectable 15-for-21 from the stripe.
The Bison outrebounded York 38-37 which led to Gallaudet holding a slim 7-6 edge in second chance points. York held significant edges in points in the paint, 48-20, and points off turnovers, 39-13. York did a better job of taking care of the ball with 18 assists while they had a season-high tying 28 assists.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday night when they host Marymount in a key CAC contest. Tip time is set for 8:00 pm at Charles Wolf Gymnasium in York.
