Spartans Pick Up First CAC Win of the Year
STEVENSON, MD-The York College men’s basketball team recorded their first Capital Athletic Conference win of the season as they traveled to Villa Julie and held off a pesky Mustang squad, 74-68, on Saturday in Stevenson, MD. The Spartans improve to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the CAC while the Mustangs fall to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
The Spartans sprinted out of the gate, taking an early 8-0 lead just 3:19 into the game. The green and white eventually pushed their lead to 11 at 20-9. Villa Julie trimmed the York lead to four thanks to a 10-3 run covering five minutes. The green and white answered that run with a 8-0 spurt that pushed their lead to 31-19. The York lead grew to 16 on a Levi Winters (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) lay up with 2:15 remaining in the half but York would not score the rest of the stanza as they settled for a 39-25 lead at the break.
The Spartans opened the half with a Chad McGowan (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) three-point play, pushing the York lead to 42-25. The Spartan lead remained in double figures until Jason Lambert converted a three-point play of his own with 9:27 left. That three point play cut the Spartan lead to 55-46. The Mustangs would continue to cut into the York advantage as they trimmed the Spartan lead to two twice, the second time coming on a Lambert jumper with 4:32 left. The Spartans responded with a McGowan jumper to push the advantage back to four. McGowan split a pair of free throws as the green and white led 67-62 with 3:39 left. The teams traded scores over the next three minutes as the lead bounced between three and five points. York’s Nick Brady (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) converted three of four free throws in the final 11 seconds to salt away the win for York.
McGowan led the Spartans with 24 points, five rebounds, one assist, a steal and a blocked shot. McGowan was 10-for-17 from the floor and 4-for-9 from the free throw line. Senior Nate Lankford (York, Pa./West York) netted 15 points to go along with seven rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Brady was the third Spartan in double figures with 13 points while he also had seven rebounds. Sophomore Jeremy Keefer (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) was the fourth Spartan to reach double figures as he chipped with 11 points while he also had seven rebounds and four assists.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 45.9% but again struggled from distance as they were just 5-for-18 (27.8%) from three including 0-for-5 in the second half. York shot 61.9% (13-for-21) from the free throw line for the game.
Villa Julie placed four players in double figures led by Greg Woody’s 16 points. Woody was 7-for-15 from the floor as he scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half. Justin Miles added 14 points, six rebounds, and two steals while Lambert added 11 points, four assists, and three rebounds. Mike Turner was the fourth Mustang in double digits with 10 points while he added three rebounds. Elysian Richardson paced the hosts on the glass with a game-high eight rebounds while he also had four points.
The Mustangs finished the game shooting 42.9% from the floor including 47.5% in their 43 point second half. Villa Julie struggled from beyond the arc as they shot 10.5% (2-for-19) from distance. They also scuffled from the free throw line as they were just 6-for-14 from the line, good for a mark of 42.9%.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday night when they host Mary Washington in a key CAC contest. The game is scheduled to tip at 8:00 pm.
