ARLINGTON, VA-The York College men’s basketball team saw their nine-game win streak come to an end as Marymount University upended the Spartans 94-83 in the season finale for both teams Saturday in Arlington, VA. The Spartans, who are the CAC regular season champions, fall to 18-7 overall and 13-3 in the CAC. The Saints conclude their regular season with a mark of 14-11 overall and 8-8 in the league.
The game was a tale of two halves. The Spartans controlled the opening 20 minutes of play but the host dominated the second half en route to the victory.
In the opening half, the Spartans had the lead for the majority of the half. The margin was in single digits during the first 15 minutes of the half. The Spartans put together a late 10-2 run that gave them a 45-33 lead with 52 seconds left in the half. Fred Stanback got a three for the Saints before senior Nate Lankford (York, Pa./West York) hit a lay up just prior to the horn as York took a 47-36 lead to the break.
The bad things started happening for York almost immediately in the second half. The Saints opened the stanza with a 21-5 run that turned the Spartans’ 11 point halftime lead into a six point York deficit with 13:02 left in the game. York cut the lead to two on a Chad McGowan (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) lay up with 11:11 left but the Saints ripped off six straight points in 40 seconds to increase the lead back to eight. A pair of Jeremy Keefer (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) threes again trimmed the lead to two but a pair of Stanback threes sandwiching a Mike Gray lay up increased the Saint lead to 74-64 with 7:10 left in regulation. Those seven points were the start of a 15-4 run that gave Marymount an 81-68 lead with 4:28 left. York was not about to roll over as York answered with a 10-1 spurt keyed by five points from senior Levi Winters (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern), a three from Nick Brady (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic), and a Keefer lay up to trim the Saint lead to 82-78 with 2:32 left. Unfortunately for York, that is as close as they would get as they could not get defensive stops or convert enough offensive opportunities in the final 2:30 of the game. Marymount outscored York 12-5 after the Spartans cut the lead to four. Marymount finished the second half outscoring the green and white 58-36.
Stanback had his second 30 point game against the Spartans this year as he recorded 31 points. Stanback was 11-for-15 from the floor including a blistering 7-for-9 from three. He also had seven rebounds and three assists in the win. Shaun Ingram came off the bench to added 16 points in just 17 minutes on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor including a pair of treys. Gray added 13 points and five rebounds while Stephen Simoneau was the fourth Saint in double figures with 12 points.
McGowan paced the green and white with 19 points and seven rebounds for the Spartans. Keefer came off the bench to tally 17 points as he was 7-for-10 from the floor including draining a career-high three triples. Winters contributed 16 points, two rebounds, and two steals while Brady added 12 points and six boards. Lankford was the fifth Spartan in double figures with 13 points, seven assists, four rebounds, and three steals.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 47.1% from the floor including 37.5% (9-for-24) from three. The Spartans again struggled at the line making just 10-of-19 from the stripe. Marymount ripped the nets to the tune of 55% shooting. The Saints made 12-of-19 (63.2%) from deep while they converted 16-of-21 from the free throw line.
Marymount finished the game holding a 38-32 edge in rebounding. Both teams took care of the ball as York had 14 turnovers while the Saints had 18 miscues. Ten of the Spartans’ 14 turnovers came in the fateful second half.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday as they open up the Capital Athletic Conference tournament by hosting Salisbury at 8:00 pm. The game will be the second contest of the women’s/men’s CAC quarterfinal double header. The women kick off the action with a 6:00 pm game against Wesley.
