MOHNTON, PA – The York College golf squad closed out the fall portion of the schedule by winning the six team Alvernia Fall Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at Ledge Rock Golf Club in Mohnton, PA.
The Spartans won the event with a team score of 305. That provided a three stroke margin over second place Messiah and eight strokes in front of tournament host Alvernia. The victory for the Spartans is their third tournament championship of the year. The Spartans had three firsts, two seconds (one of which was a tie for first and a loss on match of cards), a third and a seventh in their seven fall events.
Senior Kevin Long (Webster, N.Y./Webster-Thomas) continued his stellar fall campaign with a tie for first as he carded a one-under-par 71 to finish tied with Alvernia's Zach Arsenault. Arsenault won the individual medalist honors on match of cards.
Long opened his round on the par four seventh hole and he recorded a birdie to get one-under after one. After a par on seven, he birdied the par-five eighth hole. After pars on his next two holes, Long gave a stroke back on the par four 11th hole. He bounced back with a par and another birdie four on the 556-yard par five 13th hole. Long closed out his back nine with five straight pars to shoot an even par 36 on the back.
The Spartan was two-under heading to hole number one. He continued his par roll over the next four holes before suffering a bogey five on his final hole of the day, the par four fifth. Long finished with a 35 on the front for his one-under 71.
Long has been under par three times in seven tournamenets and ended his fall with an average of 74.4, tops on the Spartan squad.
Freshman Anthony Wagner (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) was York's next top finisher as the first-year Spartan carded a three-over-par 75. Wagner shot 38 on the front and 37 on the back as he finished tied for third. Junior Josh Strausbaugh (Orlando, Fla./Lake Howell) finished tied for ninth as he shot a seven-over-par 79. Junior David Boslough (Dalton, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) was York's final scorer as he carded an 80 to finish tied for 11th in the 29-player field. Sophomore Ryan Wolbach (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) was York's fifth finisher, placing one stroke back of Boslough with an 81 as he finished 14th.
The Spartans finished the fall averaging 306.1 as they combined for six under-par rounds, 12 top five individual finishes and a low team round of 296.
York returns to action in mid-March when they begin the spring portion of their schedule.
