Boslough and Strausbaugh Power Spartans to Second Place Finish
HUMMELSTOWN, PA – The York College golf squad placed second at the Elizabethtown Fall Blue Jay Classic at the Hershey Links on an Indian summer Thursday afternoon in Hummelstown, PA.
The Spartans narrowly missed out on another first place finish in what is proving to be an outstanding fall campaign as they were one stroke back of team champion Gettysburg with a total of 304. The Bullets led the pack with a 303 while Stevenson placed one stroke behind York in third with a 305. Messiah was fourth at 308 while Moravian rounded out the top five with a 311.
Boslough began his day on hole number one and opened with a birdie four on the par five. He gave that stroke back with a bogey on four and stubbed his toe with a double bogey six on the 450-yard par four. After paring seven, Boslough bogeyed eight but made his second birdie on a par five as he notched a four on the par five ninth hole. Boslough made the turn in two over with a 38.
The Spartan junior pared the first four holes on the backside before suffering a bogey on the 14th. He would close out his round with four more pars to card a backside 37 for his total of 75.
Strausbaugh started on the par three fourth hole and made a bogey to open his round. He then tripled the par four fifth and bogeyed the par fourth sixth to sit at five over through three holes. After a pair of pars, Strausbaugh birdied the par five ninth to get a stroke back. A second straight birdie on ten got the Spartan junior going. He would suffer a bogey on the par three 11th hole, but birdied the 583-yard par five 16th hole to climb back to three-over. Strausbaugh fired a one-under 35 on the backside. He would bogey hole number one but ended his day with a birdie three on the 360-yard par four third hole to finish with a 40 on the front side. He played his final 15 holes of the day in two under par.
Senior Kevin Long (Webster, N.Y./Webster-Thomas) and sophomore Ryan Wolbach (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) both shot a five-over-par 77's for the Green and White. That score left the Spartan duo tied for 15th place in the 69-player field. Long started on hole number one and shot a five-over-par 41 on the front. He rebounded nicely on the backside, shooting an even par 36. Wolbach started on two and fired a two-over 38 on the front and a three-over 39 on the back nine.
Freshman Anthony Wagner (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) was York's fifth participant in the tournament as he shot an 80 to finish tied for 26th.
The Spartans conclude their 2013 fall campaign on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to the Ledge Rock Golf Club for the Alvernia Invitational. The tournament is set for a 12:30 pm shotgun start.
