Long and Spartans Open Spring With Tournament Title

YORK, PA  - The York College golf team opened up the spring portion of their 2011-12 schedule in impressive fashion as the Spartans cruised to the championship of their 10-team York College Spartan Spring Golf Invitational at Out Door Country Club in York, PA.

The Spartans edged local rival Messiah by one stroke as the Green and White shot 307 while the Falcons finished one stroke back at 308. Dickinson finished third at 312 while Stevenson was fourth at 316.

Spartan sophomore Kevin Long won the event as he shot an even par 72, besting Messiah's Matt Burkhart and Elizabethtown's Ryan Laudeman for individual medalist honors.

Senior Andrew Schmehl backed Long with a very good effort as he carded a four-over-par 76 to finish tied for sixth in the 60-player field. Fellow senior Adam Burkhart also played well as he finished one stroke back of Schmehl with a five-over-par 77.

Freshman David Boslough and senior Adam Dupler each shot an 82 to round out the Spartan lineup.

The Spartans played six individuals in their only home tournament of the year. Freshman Ryan Hollinger shot a nine-over-par 81, tying him for 23rd in the tournament.

York is now off until April 5 when they travel to the Elizabethtown College Blue Jay Classic. The shotgun start is scheduled for a 12:00 pm start.
