HARRISBURG, PA – The York College golf team captured their first team win in their first tournament of the 2008 season Monday afternoon at the Penn State-Harrisburg Fall Invitational. Held at Dauphin Highlands Golf Course, the Spartans bested ten other squads and shot a tournament record 313, winning by seven strokes. Messiah College and Philadelphia Biblical each shot 320 to tie for second place.
The Spartans were paced by senior Shane Bernard (Churchville, Md./C. Milton Wright) and junior Cody Trabert (York, Pa./Central York) who each shot +5, 77s and matched six other players for the tournament’s second-best individual score. Freshman Andrew Schmehl (Vincentown, N.J./Seneca) began his collegiate career with a strong performance, shooting a 78. Seniors Jimmy DeCastro (Mantoloking, N.J./Governor Livingston) and Justin Heisler (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) secured the Spartan victory as they shot 81 and 84 respectively.
York’s second team in the tournament also put in a quality showing, finishing fourth on the day with a cumulative score of 321. Freshman Adam Dupler (York Haven, Pa./Red Land) led the young five-man team with a 78 in his first collegiate tournament. Fellow freshman Travis Bartgis (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) carded an 80 while sophomore Tom Castellano (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) shot an 81. Freshmen Wes Dixon (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern York) and Gage Weaver (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) carded an 82 and an 88 respectively to round out the scoring.
The Spartans return to action on Monday, September 22, when they travel to Annville, Pa. for the Lebanon Valley Fall Invitational. Tee time is slated for 12:30 pm.
