GLENMAURA, PA – The York College golf squad captured their
second tournament title of the spring as they won a rain-shortened
Glenmaura National College Invitational at the Glenmaura National
Golf Club in Glenmaura, Pa. The Spartans shot a team total of 308,
good enough to edge McDaniel and Elizabethtown as they each shot
310 to tie for second. The tournament was scheduled to be concluded
on Monday but heavy rains forced the cancellation of the second
round.
The championship is the Spartans’ fourth tournament title of
the school year as they won two in the fall and two in the
spring.
Freshman Andrew Schmehl (Vincetown, N.J./Seneca)
was outstanding as the freshman carded a three-over-par 74, tying
him for second in the tournament, four off the pace of individual
medalist Mitch Mercer of Susquehanna.
Senior Shane Bernard (Churchville, Md./C. Milton
Wright) was right behind Schmehl as he shot 75 to finish
in a tie for fourth. Fellow senior Jimmy DeCastro
(Mantoloking, N.J./Gov. Livingston) was the third Spartan
in the 70’s as he shot a 79 to finish in a tie for 20th in
the 58-player field. Freshman Adam Dupler (York Have,
Pa./Red Land) was the final scorer for York as he carded
an 80. Junior Cody Trabert (York, Pa./Central
York) was the final member of the Spartan lineup
participating in the tournament as he shot an 83.
The Spartans will conclude their 2008-09 campaign this coming
weekend as they participate in the Capital Athletic Conference
championship tournament at Piney Branch Golf Club in Hampstead, MD.
The two-day tournament kicks off Saturday morning and concludes
Sunday afternoon. The Spartans finished third at last year’s
championships.
