CAMDEN, DEL-The York College men’s golf team kicked off their 2007 fall golf season with a sixth place finish at the Wesley College Fall Golf Invitational at Wild Quail Golf Club in Camden, Del. The Spartans posted a team score of 306, 12 strokes back of team champion Franklin & Marshall as the Diplomats won the 13-team event. The host Wolverines placed second with a team score of 298 followed by West Chester at 300, Muhlenberg at 303 while McDaniel rounded out the top five with a team score of 304.
The Spartans were led by senior Sean Leitzell (New Cumberland, Pa./Susquehannock) as he fired a three-over-par 75, tying him for 14th in the tournament. Franklin & Marshall’s Dennis Gunderson fired a one-under-par 71 to earn tournament medalist honors.
Junior Jimmy DeCastro (Berkley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) finished one stroke back of Leitzell as he carded a four-over 76. Senior Nate Lankford (York, Pa./West York) finished tied for 28th as he shot a five-over 77. Sophomore Cody Trabert (York, Pa./Central York) rounded out the Spartans’ top four as he shot a 78.
The Spartans also had a “B” team participate in the event as a non-scoring squad. Brian Long (York, Pa./West York) led that second team with a 76 while Justin Heisler (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) shot a 78.
The Spartans, who are 7-5, return to action on Saturday when they travel to the Elizabethtown College Fall Invitational at the Hershey Country Club. The tournament is slated to begin at 12:15 pm.
