HERSHEY, PA-The York College men’s golf team recorded their first tournament championship of the year as they won the 10-team Elizabethtown College Fall Blue Jay Classic at Hershey Country Club East on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans shot a team score of 309 which was two strokes ahead of second place Dickinson. Gettysburg and Moravian tied for third at 318 while Messiah rounded out the top five with a score of 320.
Senior Sean Leitzell (New Cumberland,?Pa./Susquehannock) and junior Jimmy DeCastro (Berkley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) paced the Spartans as they each fired a four-over-par 75. That was three strokes back of individual medalist Tommy Shapiro of Dickinson. Leitzell shot 41 heading out but scorched the back nine to the tune of 34. DeCastro was almost the complete opposite of his teammate as he fired a 35 on the front and 40 on the back side.
Freshman Kevin Alvey (York, Pa./Homeschooled) was the next Spartan finisher as he fired a 77 with a 39 on the front and a 38 on the back. Sophomore Cody Trabert (York, Pa./Central York) was the fourth Spartan finisher as he shot an 82. Senior Nate Lankford (York, Pa./West?York) was the fifth Spartan tournament participant as he shot an 89.
The Spartans, who improve to 16-5, return to action on September 24 when they travel to the Lebanon Valley Invitational. The tournament is scheduled to kick off at 12:30 pm.
