Athletic Department Announces DeMeester Awards

YORK, PA – The York College Athletic Department is pleased to announce their 2013-14 William DeMeester Academic Award winners for both individual and teams.

The process for determining the academic champions changed this year. Previously, the winners were determined prior to the conclusion of the spring semester. This year, the five front runners in each category were announced at the Awards Ceremony on May 9. The winners would then be recognized once the final grades for the spring semester were complete.

The DeMeester Awards recognize the male and female four-year senior student-athletes who have the highest cumulative GPA. The team awards recognize the teams with the highest GPA for the 2013-14 school year.

The men’s DeMeester Award winner was baseball player Colin Porter (Hanover, Pa./South Western). Swimmer Kelsie Pike (Newark, Del./St. Mark’s) earned the women’s DeMeester Award.

Porter finished his Spartan career with a GPA of 3.88 as a criminal justice major. He had a fantastic senior year as he hit .352 with 40 RBI, 33 runs scored, nine doubles, and two home runs. He helped lead the Spartans to 29 victories and a CAC regular season championship.

Pike helped lead the Spartans to a strong third place finish at the 2013-14 CAC Championships in St. Mary’s City. Pike was a part of the 200 medley relay squad that set a school record at the CAC’s. She was also a part of three relay squads that earned top five finishes at the championships this past year. Pike finished eighth in the 100 breaststroke at championships. Pike finished her Spartan career with a 3.88 GPA in mathematics.

The golf squad captured the men’s team academic title as they combined to earn a GPA of 3.30. The Spartans had a great year on the course as they picked up five tournament championships and six other top three finishes including a third place finish at the CAC Championships. Men’s cross country finished second in the team standings with a 3.19 combined GPA.

The cross country squad captured the women’s team academic award as they combined to record a 3.56 GPA. The women’s squad, under the leadership of first year head coach Stephen LoBianco, had a very good campaign as Caroline DeLany (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) and Jess Miller (Dauphin, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) earned a 1-2 finish at the CAC championships as they placed second as a team. Miller advanced to the NCAA Division III championships, the first time a Spartan female cross country athlete had earned a berth to the championships. Women’s lacrosse placed second in the team standings with a 3.43 GPA.

The Spartans placed 237 student-athletes on the York College Athletic Honor Roll. The honor roll recognizes all student-athletes in good standing on their teams who earned a 3.0 GPA or above during the 2014 spring semester. That translates to a percentage of 59.5% of student-athletes who owned a 3.0 GPA or above in the spring.
