Spartan Field Hockey to Host CAC Tournament First Round on Sunday

YORK, Pa. – The York College field hockey team will host the opening round game of the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Championship Tournament on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Kinsley Field against an opponent to be determined following Friday's games.

The Spartans (9-8) enter the CAC Tournament as the fourth seed after posting a 3-3 record in conference play. Five teams make it to CAC postseason play with the top three seeds receiving byes, giving York the first round home game as the fourth seed.

The scenario for who the Spartans will face on Sunday factors in three teams who are all in contention for the fifth and final playoff spot. Frostburg (8-9), St. Mary's (6-8) and Wesley (4-13) are the three teams jockeying for position for the fifth seed. St. Mary's and Frostburg both have CAC records of 1-4 with St. Mary's owing the tiebreaker with the head-to-head win over Frostburg. Wesley is currently in last place with a conference record of 0-5.

On Friday, Frostburg plays Salisbury and St. Mary's plays Wesley. If Frostburg and St. Mary's both win, St. Mary's will get the final playoff spot because they own the tiebreaker between the two teams. If Frostburg and Wesley both win, Frostburg earns the playoff spot because Frostburg will have one more conference win. If Wesley wins and Frostburg loses, there will be a three-way tie between Frostburg, St. Mary's and Wesley, and the tiebreaker will be deiced by each team's goal differential against the other four CAC teams. The final scenario and mostly likely is scenario is if Frostburg loses and St. Mary's wins, St. Mary's will earn the fifth seed and face the Spartans on Sunday.

The Spartans are making their 24th appearance in the CAC Tournament where they have compiled an all-time record of 13-23 and have made two appearances in the championship game (1996, 2000). York has never faced Frostburg in CAC postseason play, but is 0-2 against Wesley and 5-1 against St. Mary's, including a 2-0 win on the road in last year's first round game.

York owns a 6-3 record at home this season, which includes wins over St. Mary's (2-1) and Wesley (8-2). The Spartans defeated Frostburg with a 4-3 win on the road.

Offensively, the Spartans have three players in the top-six in the CAC in both goals and points. Ali Posey (Airville, Pa. / Red Lion) ranks third in both categories with 17 goals and 39 assists, freshman Lindsay Nye (Duncannon, Pa. / Susquenita) ranks fifth in both categories with 12 goals and 27 points, while Autumn Mallory (Leonardtown, Md. / Leonardtown) ranks sixth in both categories with 10 goals and 25 points.

On the defensive end, freshman Jennifer Morrissette (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) has been a standout in her rookie campaign. Morrissette has posted 10 defensive saves on the year, which ranks her second in the CAC and ties the single-season school record for York.
