Spartans' Valiant Come-Back Bid Falls Short
YORK, Pa. – In nearly opposite fashion from Friday's match, the York College field hockey squad suffered a difficult 5-4 overtime loss at the hands of visiting McDaniel College Sunday afternoon. The Spartans, in their first home contest of the season, fall to 0-2 on the young campaign while the Green Terror improves to 0-2.
Knotted 4-4 after 70 minutes of regulation, McDaniel's Julie Little broke through for the game-winner with 6:32 remaining. After striking a penalty corner, Little's insert went out to Sara Reynolds at the top of the circle. Reynolds proceeded to strike a firm ball back across the goal where an awaiting Little banged home the decisive tally.
Despite the disappointing final, the Green and White proved a resilient squad as they came back from a 4-2 deficit late in the second half. Down two goals, courtesy of Little's first tally of the day at the 57:25 mark, the Spartans rallied over the final eight minutes of regulation. Katie Petrillo (Howell, N.J. / Freehold Township) and Nancy Saylor (Manheim, Pa. / Manheim Central) combined to cut the lead to one with 7:13 remaining as Petrillo crossed the ball from the right across the crease to Saylor who finished on the back side for her second goal of the 2013 season.
Less than two minutes later, Brewer brought the Green and White even with her second of the day. Laken Bull (Glenville, Pa. / South Western) smashed a ball into the area from outside the crease on the right near the end line. After a stop from McDaniel goalkeeper Caila White, an opportunistic Kiersten Wetzel (Spring Grove, Pa. / Spring Grove Area) turned the ball away from the netminder and toward the far post where Bailey knotted the game.
Little finished the contest with a hat trick while Sarah Meszler and Lara Haab each added a goal for McDaniel. York's Brewer tallied twice and Kirsten Bridgers (Gaithersburg, Md. / Gaithersburg) finished her second of the year.
For the contest, McDaniel held a 39-15 lead in shots while also owning a 19-13 advantage in penalty corners.
York goalkeepers Abby Baker (Baltimore, Md. / Mercey) and Brittany Alvarado (South Plainfield, N.J. / South Plainfield) combined to make 17 stops for the Spartans. Both helped keep the hosts in the game with several diving saves including Alvarado's stop of a penalty stroke in the first half. York also added three defensive saves, one each from Saylor, Jillian Brezgel (Herndon, Pa. / Line Mountain), and Jamie Gallo (Pittsgrove, N.J. / A.P. Schalick). White, who combined with Victoria Alexander, gets the victory in the McDaniel net as she recorded four saves.
The Spartans will look to get into the win column on Wednesday, September 4, when they travel to Gettysburg for a 4:00 pm non-conference tilt.
