York Falls 2-0 In First Round of CAC’s

YORK, Pa. – The York College field hockey team saw their 2012 season come to a close on Saturday afternoon as they suffered a heartbreaking 2-0 loss at home during the first round of the CAC playoffs.

The Spartans finish their campaign with a 10-8 overall record while Saint Mary's (Md.) improves to 8-7 and will face #1 Mary Washington on Wednesday.

The first half was a back and forth scoreless battle between the Spartans and the Seahawks. Both teams had plenty of opportunities to score. Total shots were close with St. Mary's edging out York 11-9. Senior Danielle Gaitings (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) came up with a huge defensive save to help keep the game tied. Both teams' goalkeepers were also able to make some big saves.

It was a similar story for both teams in the second half. The Spartans had some good opportunities to put the ball in the cage but could not come up with the finish they needed. The Seahawks were able to cash in one of their opportunities at 44:08 when Paige Decker found the back of the net.

The Green and White would continue to fight for the tying goal. However, St. Mary's would put the final nail in the coffin with less than four minutes remaining in the game. Lauriann Parker knocked in a goal to put the Seahawks up 2-0.

St. Mary's held a slim 15-14 advantage in total shots while the Spartans finished with a 16-7 margin in penalty corners.

Goalkeeper Abby Baker (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) made six saves and finished off her freshman campaign.

Christy Bishop played a strong game in goal for the Seahawks. Bishop made eight saves and earned the shutout.

With the end of the season comes the end of five seniors careers. Ashton Burk (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock), Sandee Reich (Pitman, N.J./Glassboro), Jessica Esteves (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville), Jayme Goldkind (Olney, Md./Sherwood), Katie Blankenstein (York, Pa./Central York) and Gaitings were all an important part of York's program the past four years.
