Goldkind Scores Four As Spartans Cruise Past Susquehanna
YORK, Pa. – Senior Jayme Goldkind (Olney, Md./Sherwood) scored four goals and the Spartans rolled past Susquehanna University 7-0 in the final game of the regular season on Wednesday afternoon. The game was recognized as Spartan Senior Day and honored the six seniors on the team.
Goldkind made senior day count. Her four goals were the first career goals that she scored. To top off senior day all scorers in the game came from the senior class.
With the win the Spartans now have an overall record of 10-7 and are 2-3 in the conference while Susquehanna drops to 5-12 overall.
The Green and White came out ready to make their last regular season game count. The offense fired off 16 shots in the first half while the defense held the Crusaders to only 3 shots.
It took the Spartans awhile to find the back of the net in the first half. Junior Madi Wilt (Harwood, Md./Kent Island) had a great shot 15 minutes in but the Crusaders goalkeeper made an excellent save. Susquehanna had 3 amazing defensive saves in the first 20 minutes to keep the game scoreless. Goldkind scored her first career goal with less than two minutes left in the first half. Senior Sandee Reich (Pitman, N.J./Glassboro) took a hard shot from the top of the circle and Goldkind was on the left post to tip it in.
Heading into the second half the Spartans continued to dominate on the offensive end. The Green and White's defense was once again able to hold the Crusaders to only three total shots.
At 39:15 Goldkind scored her second goal of the game with another tip this time off a hard shot from senior Ashton Burk (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock). Only five minutes later Goldkind would notch her third goal of the game.
Goldkind's fourth and final goal came at 48:54 with Kailey Brewer (Hartly, Del./Smyrna) getting credit for the assist.
The Spartans were not done scoring. Burk recorded her second goal of the season after dribbling the ball just inside the circle and ripping a shot into the right corner of the cage.
Minutes later Reich got a hold of a loose ball in front of the net to make the score 6-0 with only six minutes reamining in the game.
The seventh and final goal of the game was scored by senior defender Danielle Gaitings (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa). Gaitings pushed up into the offensive circle and got a hold of a loose ball in front of the goal and pushed it in past the Crusader defense.
York finished the game with a 28-6 edge in total shots including a 22-4 margin in shots on goal. The Spartans also held a 17-5 advantage over the Crusaders in penalty corners.
In goal freshman Abby Baker (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) earned her third shutout this season with three saves. For Susquehanna, goalkeeper Margaret Ruth started the game. Ruth played 53:16 and made 10 saves. Alyssa Rothman came in for the remaining 16:44 and had one save.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday at 2:00 pm as they host St. Mary's for the first round of Capital Athletic Conference playoffs.
