Spartans Clinch 4th Place In CAC With Win Over St. Mary’s
ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The York college women's field hockey team snuck past the St. Mary's Seahawks 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in an important CAC matchup.
With the win the Spartans (9-7, 2-3 CAC) have secured the fourth spot in the CAC while the Seahawks (7-7, 1-4 CAC) are in fifth place. The Green and White will host the Seahawks Sunday October 28 in the opening round of the CAC tournament at 2:00 pm.
In the first half the Spartans had some good opportunities to score but could not put the finishing touch on any of their shots. The Seahawk goalkeeper came up with some big saves as well.
Despite a scoreless first half the Spartans came out looking to put the game away. Sophomore Nancy Saylor (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) scored the game-winning goal at 53:39 off a strong shot from junior Madi Wilt (Harwood, Md./Kent Island). The goal was Saylor's second of the season and was all the Spartans would need to come away with a victory.
York held a 20-10 advantage in shots as well as a large 16-4 margin in penalty corners.
Freshman goalkeeper Abby Baker (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) played another strong game for the Spartans. Baker made four saves and recorded her second shutout of the year. In goal for the Seahawks Christy Bishop recorded a total of eight saves in the game.
The Spartans return to action Wednesday against Susquehanna for their last game of the regular season. The game will honor the seniors on the team and is set to start at 4:00 pm.
