YORK, Pa. – The York College women's field hockey team beat Frostburg 5-0 in a Capital Athletic Conference matchup Thursday afternoon.
With the win the Spartans improve to 8-7 overall and 1-3 in the CAC while Frostburg drops to 7-12 overall and 0-4 in the CAC.
The Spartans came out in the first half ready to take the win. The Green and White were on fire in their offensive zone.
Kailey Brewer (Hartly, Del./Smyrna) notched the first goal of the game for the Spartans just 1:35 seconds into the first half. Brewer finished a quick shot off a pass by Holly Martin (Hanover, Pa./South Western) on the first penalty corner of the game.
Martin had three quick shots of her own just a minute later but the Frostburg goalkeeper came up with some big saves.
Brewer would score her second goal of the game at 5:39 off of a rebound from the Frostburg goalkeeper.
The Spartans played really well and only allowed the Bobcats to be in their offensive circle a few times in the first half. The defense also did not allow the Bobcats a single shot during the first 35 minutes of play.
With Frostburg struggling on offense the Spartans continued to take advantage. Madi Wilt (Hardwood, Md./Kent Island) tallied the third goal of the half at 23:58. Only minutes later senior Sandee Reich (Pitman, N.J./Glassboro) knocked in another goal for her fifth goal of the season.
In the second half the Spartans continued to keep the advantage. The Bobcats were able to hold York to less shots total but Jillian Brezgel (Herndon, Pa./Line Moutnatin) was able to add one more goal at 56:26 off a pass from Katie Petrillo (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township) on a penalty corner.
Senior Jayme Goldkind (Olney, Md./Sherwood) nearly made the game 6-0 with only seconds left but she lifted the ball just over the cage.
The Spartans held a demanding 45-3 advantage in shots as well as a huge 22-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Spartan goalkeeper Abby Baker (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) finished the game with two saves. Maggie Edwards was able to make 18 saves throughout the game for the Bobcats.
York returns to action on Saturday at 12:30 pm for its final conference game at St. Mary's University.
