Spartans Come Away With 2-1 Win At DeSales
Shots (on goal)
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The York College women's field hockey team erased a one-goal halftime deficit to defeat DeSales 2-1 in a non-conference matchup Tuesday afternoon.
The Spartans struggled in the beginning to adjust to playing their first game on grass this season. The Green and White were able to get some quality shots off in the first half but could not seem to find the back of the cage.
The Bulldogs took advantage of a penalty stroke as Sam Lavin gave DeSales a 1-0 lead at 22:28.
The rest of the half the Spartans began to set the pace and only allowed the Bulldogs one more shot. The Bulldogs defense played very strong and had two defensive saves to help out their goalkeeper. Despite having some good opportunities York could not finish and would head into halftime down 1-0.
Coming out in the second half the Spartans seemed much more composed. They quickly took control of the pace of the game. In the first five minutes the Green and White had four penalty corners and six shots.
Kailey Brewer (Harlty, Del./Smyrna) took a strong shot at 47:55 to score her sixth goal of the season and tie the game at 1-1. Less than three minutes later Jillian Brezgel (Herndon, Pa./Line Mountain) would score the game-winning goal with a bullet from the right corner of the circle.
DeSales would get a good look at the goal with only 22 seconds left in regulation but freshman Abby Baker (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) came up with a good save to keep the Spartans on top.
"It was not our best game, but I'm glad we were able to pull out the win today," said head coach Jamie Swartz.
The Spartans held a large advantage in shots (30-11) as well as penalty corners (19-4).
Baker finished the game with seven total saves for the Green and White. Victoria DeToro recorded eight saves in goal for the Bulldogs while Rachel Wysocky had two defensive saves and Julia Martinez tallied one defensive save.
York returns to action Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm when they travel to Wesley for an important CAC matchup.
