Spartans Earn 3-2 Victory Over #16 Elizabethtown
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The York College women's field hockey team battled Tuesday night to beat #16 Elizabethtown 3-2 in a non-conference matchup.
The Blue Jays did not back down and answered with a goal of their own. Elizabethtown was awarded a penalty stroke and Nadine Yunginger converted for her second goal of the season at 24:43. Less then a minute later the Blue Jays took it back down the field and Kendra Hudson tipped the ball across the goal line off of a shot from Taylor Alwine.
The Green and White would tie the game up three minutes before halftime. Katie Petrillo (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township) buried a shot off a penalty corner. Ashton Burk (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) was credited with the assist.
Starting the second period the Spartans came out on fire. They took five shots in three minutes but could not manage to find the back of the cage on their chances. York would continue to outshoot the Blue Jays for the rest of the period. With time winding down Jillian Brezgel (Herndon, Pa./Line Mountain) drilled a shot at the goalkeeper and Sandee Reich (Pitman, N.J./Glassboro) would score her third goal of the season off a rebound. The Spartans would take a 3-2 lead at 68:16 and would hold on for the victory.
York ended the game with a slight 12-9 advantage in total shots as well as a slim 8-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Alanna Curtis (Eastampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) was in goal for the Spartans and made a total of two saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Alvarado (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) is still out due to an injury. The Blue Jays goalkeeper Lindy Hamp recorded three total saves.
"The game was extremely physical," said head coach Jamie Swartz. "I'm proud of the way our girls handled themselves. We did a good job playing team field hockey today and it helped us to be successful."
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they take on #1 Salisbury University in an important CAC matchup. Start time is set for 1:00 pm at Kinsley Field.
