FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The York College women's field hockey team lost 3-0 in their CAC opener against #9 Mary Washington Saturday afternoon.
With the loss the Spartans fall to 4-3, while the Eagles remain undefeated and improve to 8-0.
York and Mary Washington traded shots in the early minutes of the game. Mary Washington would convert on a corner and Lisa Charney would tally her first goal of the season at 14:34. The Eagles would hold the Spartans off for the rest of the half, allowing no shots. The Green and White's defense stepped up as well and stopped Mary Washington from scoring again before halftime.
Mary Washington started the second half out with an offensive surge and Haley Kane would score off of a penalty corner just 3:43 in. The Spartans were able to be more offensive in the second half but could not manage to get the ball in the cage. The Eagles' Jenna Steele would score the final goal of the game at 64:08.
The Eagles held a 17-12 advantage in total shot. Penalty corners were close with Mary Washington edging out York 11-8.
Spartan goalkeeper Alanna Curtis (Eastampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) played in goal due to starting goalkeeper Brittany Alvarado (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) being injured. Curtis recorded eight total saves. Eagle goalkeeper Claire Gianelle recorded five saves and was credited with the win and the shutout.
The Spartans return to action Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 pm when they travel to take on Elizabethtown College.
