Spartans capture 4-2 win against Eastern Mennonite
HARRISONBURG, Va. – The York College field hockey team beat Eastern Mennonite 4-2 on Thursday night in a non-conference matchup. The meeting is the first between the two teams. With the win the Spartans are now 3-2 and Eastern Mennonite falls to 0-4.
The Spartans started the game off strong, scoring three goals in under 12 minutes. Junior Madi Wilt (Harwood, Md./Kent Island) scored just 3:57 into the opening half off a pass from Jillian Brezgel (Herndon, Pa./Line Mountain) on a well-executed corner. Wilt notched her second goal of the game less than two minutes later during another corner, with Katie Petrillo (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township) getting credit for the assist. The Green and White kept firing on attack and freshman Holly Martin (Hanover, Pa./South Western) tallied her first career goal at 11:15. The Lady Royals would fight back and score a goal of their own during one of their two corners of the first half. Melissa Cox found the back of the net off a pass from Camille Williams at 23:22. Eastern Mennonite would continue their offensive push, but the Spartans would hold onto a 3-1 advantage going into halftime.
York came out on fire again in the second half getting seven shots off in the first 10 minutes, but could not seem to finish. The Lady Royals continued to battle and Jenessa Derstine cut the Spartans lead to one with a goal at 55:26. Despite the push from Eastern Mennonite, Martin recorded her second goal of the game and sealed the win with less then three minutes to go.
The Green and White finished the game with an 18-9 advantage in shots and an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners. Spartan goalkeeper Brittany Alvarado (South Plainfield, N.J./ South Plainfield) recorded a total of five saves. Eastern Mennonite's goalkeeper Sam Ferrier finished the game with seven saves.
The Spartans return to action Wednesday night at 7 pm when they travel to Shenandoah.
