YORK, Pa. – The York College women's field hockey team scored six goals and earned their first win of the season against Randolph-Macon Saturday during the consolation game of the York College Classic.
The Spartans came out on fire in the first half. Junior Jillian Brezgel (Herndon, Pa./Line Mountain) scored one of her two goals just 2:28 into the game off a rocket pass from senior Ashton Burk (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock). Less then five minutes later, sophomore midfielder Nancy Saylor (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) scored the second goal of the game. York was able to hold Randolph-Macon to just one shot in the first 25 minutes of the game.
The Yellow Jackets were able to score a goal on a questionable penalty stroke with 5:29 left in the first half. The Spartans did not let down and continued their offensive push going into halftime.
Opening the second half, the Green and White offensive attack did not let up. Brezgel scored her second goal of the game at 42:44 when she chipped the ball in on the low post off a rebound from Yellow Jacket goalie Nicole Woodsworth. After only two minutes, the Spartans struck again on a penalty corner. Katie Petrillo (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township) scored her first goal of the season off a pass from senior midfielder Sandee Reich (Pitman, N.J./Glassboro). The Spartans were awarded a penalty stroke at 47:00 when a Randolph-Macon defender used her foot to stop the ball from going into the goal. Reich showed her poise and made the penalty stroke.
Randolph-Macon then went on to score two goals and pushed for a come back. Sophomore Carrie Jacobs scored her second goal of the game at 52:58. She then went on to earn a hat trick and scored her third goal of the game with 9:19 left in the second half. York answered the Yellow Jackets two goals by scoring the final goal of the game as Burk recorded her first career goal at 68:31.
The Green and White held a 37-9 advantage in shots, as well as a 13-9 advantage in penalty corners. Woodworth had 13 saves in 52:55 of action for the Yellow Jackets. The Spartans' Brittany Alvarado (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) made her first collegiate start in goal and recorded two saves.
York played extremely offensive throughout the game with nine different players getting shots off. Junior Madi Wilt (Harwood, Md./Kent Island) and Reich each tallied eight shots, while Ashton Burk had six shots all on goal.
"It was a good win, an overall team effort that earned them the victory today," said head coach Jamie Swartz.
The Spartans return to action Wednesday afternoon when they take on Gettysburg. The game is set for 4:30 pm at Kinsley field.
