YORK, Pa. – The York College women's field hockey team dropped a 4-0 non-conference decision to Alvernia University in the second game of the York College Classic tournament Friday afternoon. The Spartans fall to 0-1, while Alvernia opens up their season 1-0.
The Crusaders got on the board just 6:23 into the game as Lauren Guido scored off of a loose ball in front of the cage. Alvernia then went on to make it 2-0 with 3:58 left in the first half when Erin Solley scored off a pass during a penalty corner. Amanda Galanti and Lauren Guido earned the double assist.
The Spartans could not find the back of the net during the first half. They did however have an 11-4 advantage in shots going into halftime.
York started out the second half strong, but once again could not find the cage. Alvernia downed a third goal 16:03 into the second half when Melanie Lowry passed to Miranda Peto in front of the net. Less then five minutes later the Crusaders added the last goal of the game at 55:32. Lauren Guido recorded her second unassisted goal of the game.
Spartan starting goalie Alanna Curtis (Eastampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) registered four saves, while freshman goalie Brittany Alvarado (South Plainfield, N.J./ South Plainfield) earned her first collegiate appearance in goal. Alvarado was credited with one save. Sandee Reich (Pitman, N.J./Glassboro) led the team with three shots on goal, while Kailey Brewer (Hartly, Del./Smyrna) and Holly Martin (Hanover, Pa./South Western) each had two.
Erin Wunsch earned the shutout, making 11 saves for the Crusaders. Lauren Guido was Alvernia's leading scorer with two goals and one assist.
The Spartans return to action Saturday afternoon when they face Randolph-Macon in the York College Classic consolation game. The game is set for 1:00 pm at Kinsley field. Alvernia will take on Kean for the tournament championship at 3:00 pm.
