YORK, PA – The York College field hockey teams begin the 2012 season loaded with experience and talent as the Spartans look forward to an exciting campaign. Spartan head coach Jamie Swartz welcomes back nine starters including leading scorer Sandee Reich (Pitman, NJ/Glassboro) after an 11-win 2011 season.
The Spartan campaign opens on August 31 as the Spartans host their first home tournament in the history of the field hockey program. The Green and White welcomes Alvernia, Kean, and Randolph-Macon to York for the inagural York College Spartan Tournament. After Kean and Randolph-Macon kick off the tournament with a semifinal game, the Green and White faces Alvernia in the other semifinal. The consolation match will be held Saturday at 1:00 pm followed by the championship tilt at 3:00.
York concludes the season-opening home stand on Wednesday, September 5 when the Spartans host regional opponent Gettysburg College.
The Spartans then take to the road for five straight road games including a trip to Mary Washington on September 22 for York's conference opener.
The Green and White returns to York on September 29 when they host Salisbury in a key conference contest. That starts a stretch of three home games that also features contests against Stevenson on Lynchburg College.
After trips to DeSales and Wesley, York hosts Rhodes in a special 12:00 pm game on Tuesday, October 16 followed by a CAC clash against Frostburg State on Thursday, October 18.
The Spartans conclude their CAC regular season with a trip to St. Mary's on October 20 before finishing the regular season at home against Susquehanna University on October 24.
The Capital Athletic Conference tournament begins on October 28 with first round match-ups. The tournament semifinals are set for October 31 followed by the tournament championship game at the highest remaining seed on November 3.
The Spartans finished 11-9 in 2011 including 4-3 in the CAC. York advanced to the CAC semifinals before losing to eventual conference champion Salisbury.
