Spartans Fight Hard On Senior Day, Fall Just Short
Shots (on goal)
YORK, Pa. – The York College field hockey team suffers a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to the hands of Gwynedd-Mercy College on Saturday. With the loss, the Spartans fall to 9-8 on the year, while the Griffins improve to 13-3 and extend their win streak to 10 games.
After falling behind 1-0 five minutes into the game, the Green and White quickly responded nearly a minute later with a goal of their own to tie the score at one goal apiece. Spartan Senior captain Colleen O'Rourke blasted a shot from the top of the circle which was then deflected in by sophomore forward Jillian Brezgel.
York fell behind once again as Gwynedd-Mercy's Brooke Stretch hooked up with Sarah Jackson for the their team's second goal with just under five minutes remaining in the first half.
The Spartans came out in the second half with a desire to score, which they did in less than a minute into the period. Following a York penalty corner, Sandee Reich fed a pass through traffic to Brittany Simmons. Simmons, with her back to the cage, gathered the pass, turned and fired a shot for the even-up goal.
Play continued on as both teams battled and fought hard to earn the go-ahead goal that they were both looking for. In the 54th, the Griffins caught a break as the Spartans were charged with an obstruction call that occurred inside the circle. Gwynedd-Mercy was then awarded a penalty stroke and the Griffins' Erin Gorenflo put her shot high and right for the eventual game-winner.
York had one last chance at sending the game into overtime as they were awarded three consecutive penalty corners within the last two minutes of play. However, each attempt was successfully turned away by the stingy Griffin defense.
Despite suffering the loss, York's defense put together a valiant effort as goalkeeper Alanna Curtis recorded six saves against 11 shots on goal. Also, junior captain defender Danielle Gaitings registered two defensive saves in the contest as she now has 11 for her career, putting her in a tie for fourth on York's all-time list.
On a day where the Spartans honored their two highly regarded seniors, O'Rourke and Simmons showed their strength and leadership as they combined for three points in the contest. Together, the two former All-CAC selections have totaled 62 points thus far in their careers, which include 11 goals and seven assists for Simmons and eight goals and 17 assists for O'Rourke. These two Spartan seniors will certainly be missed and we wish them the best in their future endeavors.
The Green and White will play their final regular season contest as they will travel to face conference rival Hood on Tuesday afternoon. Game time is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
