York Tallies Two Early, Holds On for Win
YORK, Pa. – The York College field hockey team solidified a spot in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament with a win at home over conference foe Frostburg State University. The Spartans improved their record to 9-7 overall and an even 3-3 in the CAC, while the Bobcats fall to 5-13 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
After coming up empty on numerous attempts to score, the Green and White broke through in the 10th minute of play when junior forward Sandee Reich tallied an unassisted goal for the game's first score. The team leader in goals, Reich now has 13 on the season, which is good for fifth in the CAC.
Just over two minutes after their first score, York was awarded three straight penalty corners and they were able to capitalize on the third. Liz Maue got the play started as she inserted the ball to Reich who then moved it over to Colleen O'Rourke at the top of the circle. O'Rourke then ripped a shot and tallied her fifth goal of the season.
The Spartan sticks were silenced in the second half due to eight saves by Frostburg goalkeeper Maggie Edwards who finished the game with 18 saves. York goalkeeper Alanna Curtis tallied three saves and her third shutout of the season as she improves her record to 6-5.
The Spartans dominated the shot margin as they out-shot the Bobcats 33-4 and held the edge in penalty corners 16-4.
The Green and White will return to action on Saturday at 1:00 pm as they will face Gwynedd-Mercy in a non-conference contest. Watch as the Spartan seniors compete in their last regular season home game at Kinsley Field.
