Shots (on goal)
OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The York College field hockey team picks up their first win in the Capital Athletic Conference with a 4-2 triumph at Stevenson University on Friday night. The Spartans improve to 7-6 overall and 1-3 in the CAC while the Mustangs fall to 3-9 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
After falling behind in the fourth minute of play, York answered back within the same minute with a goal from senior captain Colleen O'Rourke which came off a penalty corner with an insert from Kailey Brewer. Five minutes later, O'Rourke would score again with a big blast from the top of the circle on another Spartan penalty corner. Credit Brewer with the assist once again as the Green and White jumped out to a 2-1 lead. In tonight's performance, O'Rourke tallied her fourth goal of the season and Brewer moves into third in the CAC for assists with seven.
The Mustangs would record another goal to tie the game at 2-2 midway through the first half, but the Spartans would respond with a score of their own before the half was over. After a Stevenson defensive save by Rachel Guzman, York stayed on the attack and was awarded a penalty stroke. Junior forward Sandee Reich took the stroke and banged it home to give the Green and White the 3-2 lead.
Nearly six minutes into the second half, Reich would tack on an insurance goal after receiving a feed from teammate Ashton Burk. Reich now has 12 goals on the season which is one shy of the conference lead and she also ranks second in the CAC in points with 28.
Winning goalkeeper Alanna Curtis registered three saves and a clean sheet in the second half as she improves her record to 5-4.
York held an 11-8 edge in the shot column after blanking Stevenson 5-0 in the second half. The Mustangs did manage to hold the advantage in penalty corners with a margin of 11-7.
York returns to action on Sunday as they will play a neutral sight home game against Lynchburg College at Eastern Mennonite University. The non-conference tilt is slated for a 2:00 pm start time.
