Wilt Scores Twice; Spartans Come Up Short
WESTMINSTER, Md. – The York College field hockey team fell short Thursday night as they lost 4-2 at McDaniel College. With the win, the Green Terror improve to 5-1 while the visiting Spartans fall to 5-3 on the season.
After falling behind 1-0 early in the contest, the Green and White retaliated midway through the first half when Madi Wilt knocked in a ball that was misplayed by the Terror goalie. Ten minutes later, Wilt would add another unassisted goal which put the Spartans up 2-1 going into halftime.
McDaniel tied the game up midway through the second half and would eventually tack on two more unanswered goals off of penalty corners to set the lead at 4-2.
Despite the loss, the Spartan defense shut down numerous Terror runs throughout the game, most notably denying six consecutive penalty corners by McDaniel in the second half. Also on the defensive effort, junior captain Danielle Gaitings recorded her second defensive save of the season and the seventh for her career.
The Green Terror held the upper hand in the shot column with a margin of 14-5 and the home team also edged out the Spartans 12-4 in penalty corners.
York returns home on Saturday as they host Capital Athletic Conference foe Mary Washington. Game time is slated for 1:00 pm at Kinsley Field.
