YORK, Pa – The York College field hockey team came up short in their season-opener as the Spartans fell 2-1 to the visiting Crusaders of Alvernia University on Thursday afternoon. With the loss, the Green and White start off the season while the Crusaders open the 2011 campaign with 1-0 mark.
York started off the scoring with a beautiful reverse sweep goal by junior forward Sandee Reich. Reich received a pass from senior captain Colleen O'Rourke and then slipped the ball into the back right corner of the cage for the first score of the game.
Nearly two minutes after the Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead, the Crusaders evened up the score with a goal of their own. Junior forward Miranda Pet put her team on the board after she received a pass from teammate Tonya Rutt on a penalty corner.
After back-to-back penalty corners midway through the second half, Alvernia took the lead for good after a score by Lauren Guido. Guido, who got the play started, received the ball back from teammate Katy Eby and registered her for first goal of the season and gave her team the 2-1 lead.
For the game, York led the shots total 11-9 while Alvernia captured the penalty corners margin of 10-4.
The Green and White will return once again to action at Kinsley Field as they play host to Roanoke College on Saturday, September 3. Game time is slated for a 1pm start.
