Field Hockey Snaps Skid with Pink Out Cancer Win

YORK, PA - It is only fitting that the afternoon in which the York College Spartans field hockey squad was raising money to battle cancer with their Pink Out Cancer event, that the Green and White would earn a victory of their own.

The Spartans out-dueled the visiting Goucher College Gophers by a score of 3-0 in non-conference action at Kinsley Field in York.

Another Green and White victory moves the Spartan win total to nine for the season, ending a season-high three match losing streak.

Junior Brittany Simmons started the scoring for the Spartans when a pass from teammate Colleen O' Rourke glanced off of Simmons stick and found the back of the cage. The goal was Simmons sixth scoring effort of the season.

The Green and White would press the Gophers early and often hoping for a mistake that could lead to a larger York advantage.

York found that advantage when a miscue by Goucher goalkeeper Micki Manheimer offered a passing opportunity to senior Katie Dawkins that wouldn't be denied. Dawkins found fellow senior Kelly Kreamer for the goal, Kreamer's fifth of the 2010 campaign.

Goucher College would fail to make any noticeable attempts on the Spartans until the beginning of the second half of play.

That is when the Gophers would play the possession game forcing the Spartans to play out of their own zone.

The tactic would hold the Spartans to those two goals early in the game until sophomore Sandee Reich would rattle the back of the cage. Reich would receive a sweeping pass from O' Rourke off of a penalty corner, which Reich gathered and sent a rocket home for the tally.

A tough defensive battle would ensue for the remainder of the contest with the Spartans getting in the last attempt that was spoiled by a scrum in front of the Gophers cage, as time expired.

York College moves back above the .500 mark and now sits at 9-8 while the Gophers fall to 4-10.

The Spartans return to the field on Saturday, October 23 at Gwynedd-Mercy with a start time of 2:00 pm. The Green and White will return home with a regular-season and senior night match-up with Franklin and Marshall College on Tuesday, October 26 with action prepped to begin at 4:00 pm.
